Newcastle broke the deadlock in their Premier League opener against Liverpool courtesy of an Anthony Elanga goal. 

The Swedish winger netted after just five minutes at St James’ Park as the Magpies ushered in a new era under manager Matthias Jaissle. 

The strike came just seconds after a promising Liverpool attack in the hosts’ box. From the resulting break, William Osula carried the ball upfield before finding the run of Elanga. 

Bearing down in goal, the Magpies’ man made no mistake with the finish, sending a low drive across Alisson and into the far side of the goal, sparking jubilation among the home fans. 

Liverpool, themselves at the start of a new chapter under boss Andoni Iraola, then looked back to get back in the tie. 

Lukas Hornicek in the Newcastle goal did well to keep out Florian Wirtz’s bobbling effort, but Jaissle’s men kept their visitors at bay to take a slender lead into the break.
