The mountain rescue team was called to Kinder Downfall after reports a walker had fallen

A walker died after falling from the top of a waterfall in the Peak District, mountain rescue volunteers have said.

Kinder Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) said it was called to Kinder Downfall on Monday 30 June to reports the walker had fallen.

In a post on social media a week later, the organisation said it attended the scene but found he had not survived the fall.

It said Derbyshire Police had requested they retrieve him from the base of waterfall.

A coastguard helicopter was called to assist with the 10-hour operation which was also attended by Buxton Mountain Rescue's drone team and Glossop Mountain Rescue Team volunteers.

The KMRT post said: "When the helicopter arrived, conditions proved to be too challenging to winch directly from the base of the Downfall.

"So the team performed a difficult stretcher carry to a lower location where he could be collected by the helicopter and flown to our vehicles.

"This was a challenging 10-hour incident for all involved.

"We would like to thank the group of walkers who called in the incident for their assistance. The team would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the walker's family."
