At the recent automotive festival, Fuel Fest (an event created by Paul Walker’s brother), Vin Diesel said that Walker’s character Brian O’Conner could return for the Fast & Furious finale. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Diesel gave fans updates on the 11th, and supposedly the final, instalment of the action franchise.

At the event, Diesel stated that Just yesterday I was with Universal Studios. … The studio said to me, ‘Vin, can we please have the finale of Fast & Furious in April 2027?’ I said, ‘Under three conditions because I’ve been listening to my fan base.’”

These three conditions included bringing the franchise back to L.A., shifting the focus back to street racing culture and, as he worded it, “reuniting Dom and Brian O’Conner. That is what you’re going to get in the finale.”

Walker last appeared in the series in 2015’s Fast & Furious 7 after he tragically died as the result of a car accident in Valencia, California, in November 2013. The seventh movie gave his character a fitting sendoff for fans as Dom and Brian drove off, going their separate ways. They used a mixture of CGI and Walker’s two brothers, Cody and Caleb, to complete 350 shots that were needed to finish the movie.

Joe Letteri, VFX supervisor on Fast & Furious 7, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2015, that they managed to honour Paul by having him appear during the final scene. Most of the CG shots had some kind of dialogue, the sound editors had to craft the vocal performance out of [existing] dialogue from Paul, and we had to animate to that.”

The last movie in the series, 2023’s Fast Xwas considered mostly underwhelming by fans and critics. The movie grossed $700 million worldwide, which, despite being a win for that movie, is lacklustre when compared to how much the other instalments made. Hopefully, bringing the franchise back to its roots will send the series off on a high note, but only time will tell.
