What is PMAY-U 2.0?

PMAY-U 2.0, or the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0, is the Centre's 'Housing for All' mission for urban India. Launched in September 2024, the scheme aims to support one crore additional urban households in constructing, purchasing or renting affordable homes, with a total investment of Rs 10 lakh crore, including Rs 1.6 lakh crore in central assistance.

The scheme operates through four components: Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH) and the Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS).Under BLC, eligible families from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category receive financial assistance to construct a new pucca house on their own land. Under PMAY-U 2.0, beneficiaries can construct houses with a carpet area of 30 to 45 square metres, subject to scheme guidelines. States can also provide land rights to eligible landless beneficiaries. The mission has been expanded to cover 5,494 towns and Urban Development Authorities across the country. For Uttar Pradesh, the latest approval takes the number of houses sanctioned under the BLC component to nearly 4.89 lakh.
