The National Energy System Operator foresees a margin shortfall of about 1.2 gigawatts during Thursday evening’s peak demand period and has issued an Electricity Margin Notice that asks generators and flexibility providers to make additional capacity available.

Europe is in the grip of its third major heat wave of the year, with high temperatures baking southeast England, France and Spain. A high-pressure heat dome, similar to the one that brought record temperatures in June, is expected to spread in the coming days, increasing electricity demand while disrupting power generation.

France already has curbed output at several nuclear reactors during previous heatwaves due to high river temperatures and is warning it may have to curtail generation again this week. Nuclear power is the backbone of the French electricity system and the country is a major exporter of power to neighbors including the UK and Germany.

The grid warning doesn’t mean blackouts are expected, according to NESO.

“Our forecasts indicate tight electricity margins during tomorrow evening’s peak period,” a spokesperson for the operator said in an email. This is due to extreme temperatures across Europe, reducing the availability of some generation.”

Electricity Margin Notices are typically issued during the winter, when UK power demand is highest. Thursday’s notice covers the period from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. London time.
