A new UBC study found extreme heat can damage leaves and dramatically increase water loss, reducing a plant's ability to absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Researchers say current climate models do not account for these effects, which could accelerate climate change as temperatures rise. “These increased water loss rates have really big implications for climate change,” explains UBC assistant professor Sean Michaletz. Despite the findings, researchers say plants still have some ability to adapt, and stress that strong climate policy can help protect their role in regulating the Earth's climate.
