Global purchases of imported wine totaled US$39 billion in 2024. Overall, the value of wine imported into all buyer countries rose by an average 11.1% since five years earlier in 2020 when wine purchases were valued at $35.1 billion.

Year over year, international purchases of wine dropped by -3.3% compared to $40.3 billion during 2023.

The world’s biggest 5 wine importers are the United States of America, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and Japan. Collectively that cohort of major buying countries bought approaching half (47.3%) of all wine imported in 2024 by sales.

From a continental perspective, European countries bought the highest dollar worth of imported wine during 2024 valued at $20.2 billion or 51.9% of the global total. In second place were importers based in North America at 24.3% while another 17.1% of worldwide wine imports was delivered to customers in Asia.

Smaller percentages were delivered to buyers in Latin America (3%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Oceania (2.1%) led by Australia and New Zealand, then Africa (1.7%).

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code prefix for wine is 2204.

Top 15 Wine Importing Countries

Below are the 15 countries that imported the highest dollar value worth of wine during 2024. Within parenthesis is the percentage of worldwide imported wine.

  1. United States: US$7.1 billion (18.2% of total imported wine)
  2. United Kingdom: $5 billion (12.8%)
  3. Germany: $2.7 billion (6.8%)
  4. Canada: $2 billion (5.1%)
  5. Japan: $1.65 billion (4.2%)
  6. mainland China: $1.59 billion (4.1%)
  7. Netherlands: $1.55 billion (4%)
  8. Switzerland: $1.28 billion (3.3%)
  9. Belgium: $1.26 billion (3.2%)
  10. France: $986.9 million (2.5%)
  11. Hong Kong: $829.2 million (2.1%)
  12. Sweden: $820.4 million (2.1%)
  13. Russia: $819.1 million (2.1%)
  14. Denmark: $787.3 million (2%)
  15. Singapore: $703.8 million (1.8%)

By value, the listed 15 countries purchased nearly three-quarters (74.8%) of all wine imported in 2024.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing markets for wine from 2023 to 2024 were: mainland China (up 37.2%), United States of America (up 1.6%), Sweden (up 1.1%) and Canada (up 0.3%).

Those countries that posted declines in their imported wine purchases were led by: Singapore (down -28.2% from 2023), Hong Kong (down -14.5%), Germany (down -8.8%) and Japan (down -8%).

The top 100 wine importers showcased in the automated database below accounted for 99.3% of spending on globally imported wine.

Overall, the value of Canada’s imported wine flatlined via an average 0.3% increase from all supplying countries since 2023.
