A top prosecutor has been suspended in the United States after allegedly abusing her role by having affairs with three men - including a man her office was probing over an alleged sexual assault.

Camille Johnston, 46, from Ray County, was removed from her office by Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway after she was claimed to have "forfeited the office of prosecuting attorney" due to "misconduct".

A judge swiftly approved a preliminary order immediately suspending Johnston from her position due to the allegations, which the Attorney General's Office says create "at the very least, an obvious appearance of a conflict of interest".

She is said to have had an affair with a suspect in a sexual assault case who US outlets including KSHB have identified as Juan David Gutierrez.

The Attorney General's Office alleges Johnston visited "J.G." in Mississippi, "where he had absconded, and subsequently went to Florida to vacation with J.G."

The court filing concludes Johnston knew the whereabouts of "J.G." and deliberately chose not to disclose his location, demonstrating her "obvious conflict of interest" as he was being prosecuted by Ray County, reports KSHB.

Gutierrez's sexual assault case has now been pushed back until at least September, having been due to take place this week.

Another relationship is alleged to have been with a Ray County lawyer with the initials "T.T.", who "has represented, and continues to represent, numerous criminal defendants against criminal charges filed by Respondent in her role as prosecutor."

Court documents show Johnston was required to "disqualify herself, and her office, and seek a special prosecutor in any case in which T.T. was representing a defendant", reports say.

And in a third case, a former employee in the prosecutor's office claims she was sacked after revealing Johnston's relationship with a domestic violence suspect.

Johnston is reported to have been disqualified from that case when police became aware of the situation and sought a different prosecutor. She is alleged to have withheld information from the victim in the case, Ray County staff, and the circuit court.

While on top of these accusations, Johnston is accused of creating an atmosphere of "fear and tension" in her office through fits of anger and violence.

The Missouri Attorney General's Office said in its filing that it believes Johnston likely committed several crimes through the inappropriate relationships, including acceding to corruption and hindering prosecution.
