Global purchases of imported fertilizers cost a total US$90.6 billion in 2024.
The overall value of fertilizers imported in 2024 increased by an average 39.3% from all importing countries from 5 years earlier in 2020 when fertilizers purchases were valued at $65 billion.
Year over year, international purchases of fertilizers slowed by -12.3% compared to $103.4 billion starting in 2023.
Key Geographic Insights for Exported Fertilizers
The 5 biggest importers of fertilizers in 2024 were Brazil, United States of America, India, mainland China and Australia. That cohort of major buyers paid over two-fifths (42.5%) of total international spending on fertilizers imported in 2024.
From a continental perspective, Asian countries spent the most on imported fertilizers during 2024 with purchases costing $28.6 billion or 31.6% of the global total. In second place were importers based in Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean at 22.7%. Another 22.4% of globally imported fertilizers was delivered to Europe.
Another 14.3% was sent to importers in North America.
Smaller percentages were sold to buyers in Africa (5%), then Oceania (4.1%) led by Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
Sales by Type of Imported Fertilizers
As for different categories of imported fertilizers, almost three-quarters (73%) were nitrogen-based products.
Potassic fertilizers represent 22.2% compared to phosphatic fertilizers at 3.4%. Excluding those mineral or chemical fertilizer subcategories, the other fertilizer type is animal or vegetable fertilizers which accounted for the remaining 1.3%.
For research purposes, the high-level Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for fertilizers is 31.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing markets for fertilizers from 2023 to 2024 were: Australia (up 29.1%), Thailand (up 14.5%), Poland (up 10.9%) and Argentina (up 10.1%).
Those countries that posted declines in their imported fertilizers purchases were led by: Türkiye (down -28.1% from 2023), India (down -24.9%), mainland China (down -17.8%) and Belgium (down -13.8%).
