Combined exports of shelled plus in-shell almonds by country totaled US$7.25 billion during 2024.

That dollar amount results from a 6.5% advance for all almonds shippers over the five-year period starting in 2020 back when exported almonds were worth $6.8 billion.

Year over year, the overall value of exported almonds grew by 12.2% compared to $6.47 billion starting from 2023.

The international trade of almonds is highly concentrated on the supply side. The top 5 exporters of almonds are the United States of America, Australia, Spain, Türkiye and the Netherlands. Collectively, that cohort of main suppliers generated 90.8% of the world’s total almond exports as measured in US dollars.

From a continental perspective, exporters in North American countries (mainly the United States of America) sold the highest dollar worth of both shelled and in-shell almonds shipped during 2024. Sellers in North America accounted for a combined value of $4.82 billion or roughly two-thirds (66.5%) of the global total. In second place were exporters based in Europe at 17.1% while 10.7% of worldwide shipments of almonds originated from Oceanian exporters, mostly in Australia.

Suppliers in Asia sold another 4.8% worth of almonds well ahead of shippers in Latin America (0.6%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, then suppliers in Africa (0.3%).

For research purposes, the 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code prefix is 080211 for fresh or dried almonds in shell, 080212 for unshelled almonds.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of almonds during 2024, including both in-shell and unshelled versions.

  1. United States: US$4.8 billion (66.5% of total exported almonds)
  2. Spain: $973.9 million (13.4%)
  3. Australia: $469.4 million (6.5%)
  4. Türkiye: $172.8 million (2.4%)
  5. Netherlands: $144.6 million (2%)
  6. Germany: $130.2 million (1.8%)
  7. Italy: $126.6 million (1.7%)
  8. Portugal: $60.8 million (0.8%)
  9. Chile: $38.7 million (0.53%)
  10. Iran: $34 million (0.47%)
  11. Afghanistan: $26.8 million (0.37%)
  12. Vietnam: $26.4 million (0.36%)
  13. Belgium: $24.9 million (0.34%)

By value, the listed 15 countries shipped 97.7% of all almonds exported in 2024.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing almonds exporters since 2020 were: Portugal (up 676.2%), Australia (up 69%), Türkiye (up 65.4%) and Vietnam (up 51.6%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported almonds sales were led by: Belgium (down -51.7% from 2020), Hong Kong (down -41.7%), Germany (down -11.9%) and Chile (down -9.5%).

Exports of Shelled Almonds by Country

Worldwide exports of shelled almonds totaled US$5.53 billion in 2024 or 76.2% of all almond exports (down from 74.6% for 2023). That dollar amount reflects a 1.1% gain for all shelled almonds shippers over the five-year period starting in 2020. Year over year, the value of shelled almond exports accelerated by 14% from 2023 to 2024.

Among continents, North American countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of exported shelled almonds during 2024 with shipments valued at $3.5 billion or 63.8% of the global total. In second place were exporters in Europe at 21.1%, followed by competitors in Oceania at 8.2% mostly Australia. Another 5.9% was furnished by providers in Asia. Just 0.7% came from Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, trailed by the 0.4% supplied by sellers in Africa.

  2. Spain: $650.8 million (11.8%)
  3. Australia: $453 million (8.2%)

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing shelled almonds exporters since 2020 were: Portugal (up 657.6%), Australia (up 63%), Türkiye (up 60.2%) and Vietnam (up 48.3%).

Those countries that posted declines in their international shelled almonds sales were led by: Belgium (down -54.2% from 2020), Hong Kong (down -49.1%), Italy (down -44.3%) and Germany (down -12.3%).

Exports of Unshelled Almonds by Country

Global sales for exported in-shell almonds by country equaled US$1.73 billion or 23.8% of all almond exports in 2024.

Overall, the value of exported unshelled almonds rose by an average 28.6% for all exporting countries since 2020.

Year over year, the value of in-shell almond exports expanded by 6.6% compared to 2023.

Among continents, providers in North American countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of in-shell almonds exported during 2024 with shipments valued at $1.3 billion or 75.2% of the global total. In second place were Oceanian exporters at 18.7% (mostly Australia) whereas 4.3% were shipped by exporters in Europe. Another 1.6% worth of unshelled almonds originated from Asia trailed by suppliers in Africa (0.1%), then sellers in Latin America (0.05%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

Those countries that posted declines in their international in-shell almonds sales were led by: United Arab Emirates (down -95.8% from 2020), Hong Kong (down -90.5%), Uzbekistan (down -57.5%) and Spain (down -42.3%).
