The most important topic of analysis in our Editorial section the past week was the landmark ruling of the US Supreme Court on Trump’s tariff policy. While the court struck down Trump’s exercise of powers under International Economic Emergency Powers, 1977 as a case of executive overreach, it would still be premature to think that high US tariffs are a thing of the past. For India, it must continue with its trade talks with the US, as the SC ruling gives it a chance to leverage a more favourable deal, argues our Editorial. Another Editorial commented on the impressive performance of public sector banks in the latest December ended quarter. PSBs have outpaced their private counterparts in loan growth, loan pricing and low credit-deposit ratio. Our Editorial argues that to sustain this momentum, PSBs must bolster their underwriting capabilities by adopting AI and mining data on borrowers, loan evaluation and monitoring.
