The Odyssey seems sure of itself with Universal electing to skip influencer word-of-mouth screenings in favour of screenings for film critics, after the film’s global premiere on July 6 in London. Studios recently have prioritised fans, particularly influencers who have seen major films ahead of the critics, in a bid to drive up publicity and hype.

Disney faced controversy earlier this year when they hosted a group of influencers at Disneyland and presented their interactions with Pedro Pascal as him surprising regular tourists. Studios across the board are electing to do so. Warner Brothers hosted early influencer screenings for Supergirl, which received rave reviews before the film debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 59% score.

Universal elected to host fan screenings for Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, which saw controversy, given a claim that the film was “Spielberg’s best film in 20 years”.

Christopher Nolan has managed to prove his films have critical and box office appeal. Oppenheimer, his previous feature film, won seven Oscars, including Best Director for Nolan and Best Picture. It’s easy to see why Universal have faith in him and the film to have mass and critical appeal, and why they are letting the film speak for itself.

Synopsis:

The film stars Matt Damon  as Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca who makes a long and arduous journey home after the Trojan War. He wishes to reunite with his wife, Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway and his son, Telemachus, played by Tom Holland. Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page and Zendayaco-star.

The Odyssey is in cinemas on July 17th.
