Costa Rica is widely recognized for its national parks, exceptional biodiversity, and enduring commitment to conservation. During the past three decades, it has also emerged as one of the world’s leading destinations for wellbeing. Yoga retreats, wellness resorts, thermal springs, and nature based experiences have contributed to that reputation, but they represent only one part of a much broader story.

Costa Rica’s greatest source of wellbeing was never designed or built. It is rooted in the land itself.

Within a territory of just over 51,000 square kilometers, the country encompasses tropical dry forests, cloud forests, volcanic mountain ranges, fertile valleys, mangrove estuaries, two coastlines, coral reefs, and some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. These landscapes have shaped far more than the scenery. They have influenced agriculture, cuisine, settlement patterns, architecture, conservation, and the traditions of the communities that have lived among them for generations.

Unlike destinations where wellbeing is concentrated in a single region or closely associated with luxury hospitality, Costa Rica offers a remarkable diversity of experiences shaped by geography. Every province possesses its own identity. Climate, altitude, ecosystems, history, and local culture have created distinct ways of living, working, eating, and interacting with the natural environment.

Geography has also influenced the country’s economic development. The volcanic soils of the central highlands support coffee cultivation. The Caribbean lowlands provide favorable conditions for cacao, tropical fruit, and other agricultural products. Along both coastlines, fishing communities have flourished for generations, while protected forests, rivers, and marine ecosystems have helped establish Costa Rica as a global leader in ecotourism.

To understand Costa Rica as a destination for wellbeing is therefore to understand its geography. Every landscape tells a different story, and every province offers a distinct perspective on the relationship between people and place. Together, they reveal how the natural environment has quietly shaped the country’s culture, economy, traditions, and quality of life.

This series explores that relationship one province at a time. Beginning in Guanacaste and continuing through Puntarenas, Alajuela, Heredia, Cartago, Limón, and San José, each article examines how geography has influenced the identity of a region and, in turn, contributed to one of Costa Rica’s defining strengths: a way of life deeply connected to the natural world.
