In a surprise move, Tailfin has officially announced its sale to MVC Group. Although core members will stay on to continue the mission, the sale raises questions about the company’s future. Officially announced yesterday, Tailfin’s sale to MVC—a group specializing in technical apparel for cycling and outdoor sports—sent shockwaves through the bikepacking space. The British brand has led technical gear development for the past few years, resulting in what the company says is nearly 50% annual growth. Despite its outsized presence, the brand has always been known as a small but mighty crew. Now, through this acquisition by MVC, which owns brands like Sportful and Castelli, the brand’s forecasted future has fundamentally changed. To better understand why Tailfin sold to a larger conglomerate, Neil sat down with Nick Broadbent and James Atkey, Tailfin’s CEO and CMO.

Per the official press release, Tailfin’s Founder and management team will continue to lead the company while retaining a minority stake. The brand states that this will ensure strategic continuity and preserve the innovation capabilities that have driven its growth. As for MVC’s motivations, they said the acquisition is a major step toward reaching €150 million in revenue by 2028. Interestingly, MVC’s CEO, Emilio Foà, noted, “We are also integrating a strategic asset: the company’s distinctive technological expertise and extensive intellectual property, which could generate product innovation across the different disciplines in which we operate, from cycling and triathlon to outdoor sports.”
