Opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu have alleged that the supply of Aavin’s Green Magic milk has been reduced, with only very minimal quantities being made available for sale currently. However, the government has refuted these claims.
While Aavin sells various categories of milk including Diet, Nice, Delight, Green Magic, and Premium, political leaders have accused the management of cutting down the supply of the popular Green Magic variant which contains 4.5% fat.
In a statement issued regarding this issue, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) President Anbumani Ramadoss stated that due to the reduction in Green Magic milk sales, the general public is being forced to buy private brands by shelling out up to ₹24 more per litre.
Pointing out that, out of the 14 lakh litres of milk sold daily by Aavin in Chennai, 7.5 lakh litres belong to the Green Magic category, and he charged that its supply has now been slashed to 3.5 lakh litres. He further mentioned that reports are surfacing indicating that Aavin has decided to completely phase out the sale of its green-packet milk in the coming days.
“Green-packet milk is the most heavily subsidised milk sold by Aavin in Tamil Nadu. While private companies sell this variant for up to ₹68 per litre, Aavin retails it at just ₹44. Unable to bear the financial losses resulting from this, Aavin is trying to bring an end to the supply of green-packet milk,” Anbumani Ramadoss said, urging that the sales of Green Magic milk must not be scaled down.
BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran also insisted that the supply of Green Magic milk must be maintained at its usual volume.
Highlighting the reports surrounding Green Magic milk, K. Annamalai, the founder of ‘We the Leader’ organisation, stated: “Back in 2023, during the DMK regime, a similar decision was made to stop the sale of the green-packet milk and replace it with the 3.5% fat purple-packet milk. The DMK government dropped the plan back then following stiff opposition. However, the current TVK government imposing the exact same decision on the people now is highly condemnable.”
Government response
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has stated that the reports claiming a drop in the distribution of Aavin Green Magic milk are completely baseless. In an official release, the government clarified that Aavin continues to supply all variants of milk including Green Magic, as usual based on consumer demand, and assured that this regular supply will continue.
