In truth, I think as soon as Switzerland scored their second, barely 60 seconds into the second half, the heads dropped and they never recovered.

The urgency went out of their game, and the fight left them.

It was so comfortable for Switzerland — they were just in cruise control.

Switzerland are back into the last 16 of the World Cup after a thoroughly professional 2-0 victory over a lacklustre Algeria side in Vancouver.

Breel Embolo converted against the run of play in the opening 10 minutes following a stunning run from Johan Manzambi.

That goal settled the Swiss, who looked the better side up until half-time and, within 60 seconds of the restart, they had doubled their lead, Dan Ndoye side-footing home after a defensive mix-up.

From there, Algeria barely threatened, limping out of the tournament in the face of the efficient Swiss, who will remain in Vancouver to face the winner of Colombia and Ghana.

On the evidence of this performance, they will certainly fancy themselves as a red-hot chance to make the quarter-finals.

One last chance to put a cherry on top for the Swiss!

Remo Freuler powers a shot towards goal and forces a save from Zidane.

He holds his head, but soon he'll be celebrating.

And then has the door unceremoniously slammed shut in his face.

Ricardo Rodríguez just closing off the space, and he can't get the ball into the middle where there are a couple of players waiting in white.

And it is the Swiss fans who are roaring and chanting in the stands as the board is held up.

They are about to have a Vancouver party as they head to the round of 16, which will also be in Vancouver, against Ghana or Colombia.

They are not one of the more fancied teams, but in the quadrant of the draw that they find themselves in, they may be looking at a deep run.

Won't go down in the record books for Gregor Kobel though as there was a very clear offside against Anis Hadj Moussa.

Indeed, there are two offside players there for Algeria as the ball was curled in by Rayan Aït-Nouri.

Michel Aebischer and Silvan Widmer are all set to come on, but the fourth official isn't ready.

How strange.

The Swiss are annoyed.

Dan Ndoye is off, so is Denis Zakaria.

Breel Embolo is off, Zeki Amdouni comes on.

Adil Boulbina has come on for the stricken Rafik Belghali.

HOW DID RIEDER MISS THAT!

An astonishing miss from Fabian Rieder!

It was a lovely ball across the penalty area by Denis Zakaria.

It was just too far ahead of Breel Embolo, who was sliding in.

But Fabian Rieder was on his own at the back post and somehow managed to make a mess of it and play it back to the keeper, Luca Zidane, who couldn't believe his luck.

Incredible.

He might have to come off after another little collision.

He is continuing to chat with Xhaka though; lots of chat between the pair throughout.

Meanwhile, Embolo has a go from the edge of the penalty area that flies closer to the BC Centre roof than the goal.

Luca Zidane has to use his feet to keep a shot out, but the ball falls to Fabian Rieder on the edge of the penalty area.

Granit Xhaka has gone down after a really ugly looking challenge from Hicham Boudaoui, who is booked instantly.

It's probably on the yellow side of orange as far as challenges go, but Boudaoui has to be more careful than that.

Dice are being rolled on the Algerian bench.

Anis Hadj Moussa and Hicham Boudaoui are coming on for Nabil Bentaleb and the skipper, Riyad Mahrez.

Faces are being refreshed from the Swiss bench too.
