A swarm of honeybees delayed a flight for 46 minutes in Surat. Videos of the honeybees, clustered on the IndiGo flight’s belly cargo door, went viral on social media on Monday.
Surat Airport director S C Bhalse told The Indian Express, “We are shocked. Our airport staff were present near the flight when it landed at Surat International Airport from Jaipur. The belly cargo door was kept open to allow the loading of passengers’ luggage. One of the staff members spotted the swarm of honeybees and informed us. We removed it with the help of a water cannon by our disaster management team officials. The flight was delayed for around 46 minutes for its journey to Jaipur.”
He further added, “We have set up an internal committee to find out the source of the honeybees. We assume that it may have come from the Eastern side of the Airport. We have checked all our CCTV footage installed at the airport, but nothing of this nature has been found. We are working on it.”

A member of NGO ‘We work for Working at Surat Airport’ E H Pathan said, “We are also shocked that in just a short time, thousands of honeybees had come and stuck on the belly cargo door of the flight, while kept open. We suspect that there would be some beehives on the airport campus. We are also looking after the source of such honeybees.”
