Last month, Deadline broke the news that Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, The Housemaid) had joined the cast of Hollow. It’s now been confirmed that Sony Pictures has secured the rights following a highly competitive studio bidding war.

The film is said to be an adaptation of writer Lindsey Anderson Beer’s upcoming debut novel. Beer has previously written Pet Semetary: Bloodlines and Sierra Burgess is a Loser.

Beer’s book is a reimagining of Washington Irving’s 1820 short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Irving’s story centres on a Connecticut school teacher, Ichabod Crane, who moves to a remote valley near Tarrytown in 1790. There, he becomes infatuated with Katrina Van Tassel, a daughter of a wealthy farmer. With stories of a mysterious headless horseman lingering in the shadows, everything is not as it seems in the once sleepy town.

In Beer’s adaptation, dubbed an “erotic retelling” of Irving’s story, Van Tassel is the central figure in a dangerous mystery and seductive supernatural love triangle. The tale is said to blend “gothic atmosphere, psychological intrigue and erotic thriller” elements.

Casting for the two other parts of the love triangle – Brom Bones and Ichabod Crane – is still to be confirmed.

Irving’s short story has seen various adaptations since its publication in 1820. The most recent retelling is Tim Burton’s 1999 Sleepy Hollow, starring Christina Ricci and Johnny Depp.

Beer will write, produce and direct the film with Sony, Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment label, and Sweeney’s newly launched Honey Trap company. Alexandra Banks and Spencer Walken will executive produce.
