Solo travel has become one of the fastest-growing ways to holiday, giving people the freedom to explore at their own pace without having to work around anyone else's plans. New research from online travel agent Opodo, based on a survey of 9,000 people worldwide, including 2,000 in the UK, reveals what's driving more people to travel alone.

For UK travellers, the biggest reason for booking a solo trip is freedom, with 32% saying they enjoy the independence of travelling on their own. Travelling solo also gives people the flexibility to set their own pace, follow their own interests and make spontaneous decisions without having to compromise with friends, family or partners.

Another 30% said they go solo because friends or family are unavailable, while 21% travel alone to meet new people – an increase of 3% since 2023. Self-discovery is also a key motivator, with one in five (20%) saying it's the main reason they head off alone.

From city breaks to long-haul adventures, travelling alone offers the chance to create a personalised itinerary, discover new places at a comfortable pace and enjoy the confidence that comes with stepping out alone. However, to ensure a safe stay, a little preparation can help ensure a smoother journey.

One common issue for independent travellers is single occupancy supplements - this is when hotels and cruise operators charge extra for guests staying in a room designed for two people. But by using a travel operator like Opodo that compares different packages, looking for solo-friendly deals and choosing providers that offer reduced or no single supplements, it can be easier to keep costs under control.

Opodo, billed as one of Europe’s leading online travel agencies, helps millions of travellers search, compare, and book flights, hotels, package holidays and other travel extras in one place. Through its platform, Opodo makes it easier for holidaymakers to plan trips around the world, whether booking a quick city break, a family getaway or a solo adventure.

Some of Opodo's top solo travel destinations for 2026 are all European favourites that combine culture, great food and plenty of opportunities to explore at your own pace. Barcelona tops the list, offering a mix of beach days, Gothic architecture and lively tapas bars, while Amsterdam appeals with its picturesque canals, world-class museums, cosy cafés and relaxed atmosphere that's perfect for wandering alone.

Rounding out the top five are three sun-soaked southern European cities. Malaga blends historic streets, beaches and an impressive art scene, making it ideal for travellers who want both culture and coast. Lisbon charms with its colourful streets, iconic trams and panoramic viewpoints, while Faro offers a slower pace, with a charming old town, easy access to the Algarve's beaches and the tranquil landscapes of the Ria Formosa Nature Park – perfect for solo travellers looking to unwind.

For solo travellers planning further ahead, long-haul adventures are also on the rise, with more people booking once-in-a-lifetime trips for 2027. Travelling alone makes it easier to build a personalised itinerary, whether that's exploring vibrant cities, discovering different cultures or ticking off bucket-list experiences without having to compromise on where to go or how long to stay.

Panama, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand are also attracting solo travellers seeking adventure, culture and unforgettable experiences. From Panama’s tropical landscapes and conservation-led escapes to Hong Kong’s mix of traditions, skylines and nightlife, these destinations offer plenty of opportunities for independent exploration.

Meanwhile, Singapore’s modern attractions and Thailand’s beaches, temples and welcoming atmosphere provide the perfect balance of discovery, relaxation and adventure.

If a guided tour for solo travellers is something you would prefer, Mercury Holidays offers small group tours in some of the most sought-after destinations in the world. Likewise, Trailfinders is another provider of backpacking and long-haul tours for singles and groups.

For holidaymakers looking to enjoy some fun in the sun, On The Beach has solo beach holidays across Europe and beyond, while Saga Holidays offers solo deals for travellers over 50.

With so many different deals and destinations to choose from, Opodo is offering something for every type of traveller. One passenger said: "As a solo traveller, using Opodo has helped me get great deals on flights & hotel bookings, so it’s an added plus that they take their customers seriously."

Another added: "Being a solo traveller in my 70s, I was concerned about arranging connecting flights and overnight accommodation. Thanks to Opodo, all went swimmingly."

Travellers who upgraded to Opodo Prime have also shared their experiences, with one saying: "It saves me money and is easy to renew." Others were less impressed with the Prime upgrade, calling it "a waste of time" and saying that the scheme is "impossible to complain about or cancel."
