Six people had to be rescued by firefighters as flames engulfed a three-storey apartment block in London.

Fire crews were called to the blaze on Edge Hill in Woolwich, East London, at 1.35am today. London Fire Brigade (LFB) explained that two cars, a caravan, garages and a number of flats were affected by the incident.

About 10 residents were evacuated from their homes and five adults and one child were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation. Around 60 firefighters were deployed to the scene.

LFB received 26 calls regarding the incident. Crews from Plumbstead, East Greenwich, Eltham and other surrounding stations were all present.

The flames were brought under control just before 4am. An investigation is now ongoing to establish the circumstances of the fire.

A statement from LFB read: "A number of flats were damaged due to the heat of the fire, while around three garages and all of the vehicles were completely destroyed. Around 10 residents were evacuated from the building and six people were rescued by firefighters.

"Five adults and one child suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service."
