Benchmark stock index Sensex tanked 1,045 points while Nifty slid to near 22,230 level on Thursday following heavy selling in rate-sensitive, commodities and FMCG shares amid a sharp spike in crude oil prices and growing prospect of tighter domestic and global monetary conditions.
Falling for the second day running, the 30-share BSE Sensex tumbled 1,045.46 points, or 1.44 per cent, to settle at 71,593.24. During the day, it slumped 1,310.95 points, or 1.80 per cent, to 71,327.75.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, jumped 4.25 per cent to USD 104.5 per barrel.
The Reserve Bank of India raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent on Wednesday, its first hike in nearly four years, while signalling that rate cuts are off the table in the near term and that further hikes could follow amid rising inflation, a weak rupee and high crude oil prices.

Gold Breaks $4100, Silver Below $60 as a Strong Dollar and Fed Hike Bets Weigh
Renisha Chainani, Chief Research officer at Augmont
Price Movement - Gold and silver slipped through key support at $4100 and $60 respectively, weighed down by a dollar holding firm at an 18-month high. Traders are also bracing for the possibility of one more US Federal Reserve rate hike this year. According to CME’s FedWatch tool, markets see just an 18% chance of a hike later this month, but that jumps to an 80% likelihood for December.
•\u0009Geopolitical Tensions – IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has warned that the global economy faces mounting pressure from stubbornly high energy prices, record public debt and the risks building up around the AI investment boom. She urged governments to put protective fiscal and monetary policy measures in place.
•\u0009Macro-Economic Signals – Minutes from last month’s meeting show Fed policymakers were split not on whether to raise rates, but why. “Some participants” saw a hike as a way to keep energy and other price shocks in check, while a more hawkish core argued it was needed to guard against emerging demand-driven inflation.
Technical Triggers\u0009
•\u0009Gold’s break below $4100 (~ Rs 148,800) now opens the door to $4000 (~ Rs 145,000). On the upside, resistance sits near $4200 (~ Rs 151,500).
•\u0009Silver has slipped below the neckline of a head-and-shoulders pattern on the daily chart at $62.5 (~ Rs 230,000). The first target of $60 (~ Rs 224,000) has already been reached, and the next lies at $57 (~ Rs 215,000).

Shlok Srivastav, Co-founder and COO, Appreciate on RBI MPC announcement
“The RBI has raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%, shifting its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening. The move comes as inflation has risen to 4.82%, crude oil is around $100 a barrel and the rupee is near ₹97 to the dollar. Higher rates can help contain inflation and support the rupee, but they do not eliminate currency pressure. During the RBI’s 2022–23 tightening cycle, the repo rate rose 250 basis points from 4% to 6.50%, yet the rupee depreciated about 10% against the dollar in 2022. The same pattern appeared in 2011, 2013 and 2018, when the rupee fell around 16%, 11.4% and 8.3%, respectively, despite tighter monetary policy. Indian equities have also historically reacted to tighter policy. An analysis of 72 RBI announcements between 2014 and 2025 found the Nifty 50 averaged a 0.50% decline on rate-hike announcement days, versus a 0.66% gain after rate cuts. These patterns do not mean the rupee or Indian equities must fall after every hike. They show that tighter domestic policy does not eliminate currency or equity-market risk. For an Indian investor, U.S. assets provide a direct counterweight. Dollar-denominated investments are less dependent on India’s domestic rate cycle, while rupee depreciation increases their INR value. Any appreciation in the underlying U.S. asset comes on top of that currency effect. The latest hike therefore strengthens the case for holding part of a portfolio outside India’s interest-rate and currency cycle, rather than relying entirely on domestic assets.”

MoneyTruVa secures investment from Sunil Singhania and Raj Shamani to build financial info platform for Indian investors
MoneyTruVa, a structured financial information platform for Indian investors, has raised an undisclosed amount in a seed round.
MoneyTruVa brings together financial information that is scattered across exchange filings, media and social platforms, and presents it in a structured format with context. It aims to bring together investors and stakeholders across the financial ecosystem, enabling them to discover information, understand it and make better-informed decisions. The platform is designed to bring greater clarity to an information landscape that is often fragmented across multiple sources and formats.
India’s investor base has crossed 13 crore unique accounts, supported by progressive regulation, robust market infrastructure, exchanges, intermediaries and listed companies. Bitcoin drops toward $83,000 after $500 million in liquidations; further downside possible if support fails, says Delta Exchange’s Riya Sehgal
Riya Sehgal, Research Analyst, Delta Exchange
Bitcoin has slipped toward $83,000, while Ethereum has fallen toward $2,580. More than $500 million in liquidations, largely long positions, accelerated the decline as leverage unwound across derivatives markets.
The latest FOMC minutes added pressure, with policymakers cautious on inflation and indicating that monetary conditions may remain restrictive. Elevated Treasury yields, a stronger dollar and higher energy prices continue to weigh on risk appetite.
On-chain and market data showed vulnerability ahead of the decline, with profit-taking from recent Bitcoin buyers and weak fresh capital inflows.
BTC is testing the $82,500–$83,500 demand zone. A break below could expose $81,500–$82,000, while a reclaim of $83,800–$84,000 could signal stabilization. For Ethereum, $2,540 is immediate support, while $2,585–$2,600 is the first reclaim zone.

PL Capital’s Vikram Kasat: US stocks end October streak; 10-year yield hits 5.37% before strong auction. Nifty needs breakout above 22,740 for bullish turn; caution advised below this level
Vikram Kasat - Chief Business Officer – Advisory and Dealing at PL Capital
US stock market’s October winning streak came to an end on Wednesday, but the major indexes are still hovering near record levels.
Dow Jones fell 341 points, S&P 500 fell 0.2%. Nasdaq dropped 0.2%.
The 10-year Treasury notes were sold at a yield of 5.30%, a payout that will be given to investors for the next decade semi-annually. This yield is 0.018 percentage points below the pre-bidding deadline level, which is another sign of strong demand.
A brutal meltdown of long-term government bonds had set the stage for the auction. The 10-year yield climbed as high as 5.368% in the morning, a level not seen since 2002. Shortly after the auction, the 10-year yield fell as low as 5.273%, before rebounding slightly.
Traders see an 82.8% chance that the federal funds rate will hold steady, compared to a 17.2% chance of a quarter-point rate hike, On the flip side, traders see just a 16.9% chance of no hike this year.
Nifty 22603.05
For Nifty to turn bullish, we need a decisive breakout above 22740, followed by a sustained close above this level. Until then, we remain cautious on the upside.

Crypto Market Monitor: Market Consolidation and Key Levels
Nischal Shetty, Founder, WazirX
Market Snapshot
The crypto market is consolidating with a cautious bias. Total market capitalisation stands near $2.83 trillion, while 24-hour trading volume is approximately $106.84 billion.
Bitcoin is trading around $83,050, down nearly 1.4%, while Ethereum is near $2,578, declining about 2.7%. Most major altcoins are also under pressure, although BNB remains marginally positive.
The Fear and Greed Index is at 60, indicating that sentiment remains in the “Greed” zone despite the pullback. Bitcoin dominance is elevated at 59%, suggesting that capital continues to favour the market’s largest asset. Crypto ETFs recorded net outflows of approximately $213.4 million on October 7.
Traditional markets also reflected a risk-off tone: the Dow fell 0.66%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq declined 0.22% each. Oil gained 1.5% and gold rose 0.41%, indicating some movement towards defensive assets.
Bitcoin: Support and Resistance
Bitcoin is trading near $83,000 after failing to maintain its recent upward momentum.
The immediate support zone lies between $82,000 and $83,000. A sustained move below this area could bring the psychological $80,000 level into focus.
On the upside, Bitcoin must reclaim the 84,500–85,000 zone to improve short-term sentiment. A decisive breakout above this range could open the door towards $87,000.
Bitcoin’s implied volatility remains relatively contained at 38.39, suggesting that the market is cautious but not yet pricing in extreme price swings.
Ethereum: Key Levels
Ethereum is underperforming Bitcoin and is currently trading near $2,578.
Immediate support is visible around $2,550, followed by the stronger psychological level of $2,500. If selling pressure persists, traders may closely monitor whether ETH can defend this broader support area.
The first resistance zone lies around 2,625–2,650. A recovery above this range could allow Ethereum to retest $2,700.
Ethereum’s implied volatility stands at 50.53, considerably higher than Bitcoin’s, indicating the possibility of wider short-term price movements.
What to Watch
Market participants should monitor whether Bitcoin can defend the 82,000–83,000 support zone and whether Ethereum finds buying interest near 2,550–2,500. Continued crypto ETF outflows could weigh on institutional sentiment, while Bitcoin dominance at 59% may limit broader altcoin momentum. Elevated perpetual open interest of approximately $430.81 billion also warrants attention, as leveraged positions could amplify volatility. Movements in oil, gold and US equities may provide further signals about the direction of global risk appetite.”

Bitcoin slips below $85,000 as ETF flows turn volatile; $82,000-83,000 support in focus
Market review by Vikram Subburaj, CEO, Giottus.com
October 8, 2026
Bitcoin is trading around $83,300. BTC has fallen below the $85,000 level after failing to break $87,000. The 82,000-83,000 zone is now the immediate support area. The next support is around $80,000. Resistance has shifted to 84,500-85,000. A sustained break above $85,000 would help stabilise the short-term trend.
ETF demand has turned more volatile. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $102.7 million of inflows on October 1 and $189.9 million on October 2. They then saw about $89.8 million of outflows on October 5. Flows recovered with about $118.8 million of inflows on October 6. This was followed by roughly $168.6 million of outflows on October 7. The contrast with the $999 million inflow on September 21 highlights the recent slowdown.
On-chain indicators remain relatively healthy. Bitcoin’s MVRV is around 1.57 in the latest available reading. SOPR is close to 1. This suggests that holders are still realising small profits. More than 63% of Bitcoin supply had not moved for at least one year as of October 6. However, more than $550 million in crypto positions were liquidated during the recent sell-off.
Large-cap altcoins are under pressure. ETH is around $2,620, down about 4.3% over 24 hours. BNB is near $775, down about 0.6%. XRP is around $1.42, down about 5%. SOL is near $117, down about 3.7%. TRX is around $0.33 and is relatively resilient. The broader weakness shows that altcoins are seeing sharper selling than Bitcoin as the market turns risk-off.
Macro has turned less supportive. The Fed minutes retained a hawkish tone on inflation. Markets now see about a 19% probability of an October Fed hike. The dollar index is around 102.2. Oil prices remain elevated. These factors are keeping pressure on risk assets. US CPI on October 14 and the October 27-28 Fed meeting remain key catalysts.
Our advice: Investors should avoid catching a falling market. The 82,000-83,000 Bitcoin zone is important. A recovery above $85,000 would improve sentiment. ETF flows and US inflation data will be critical for the next major move.

HUL raises detergent prices by 2–7% across Wheel, Surf Excel, and Rin brands to offset higher input costs
Hindustan Unilever (HUL) has raised detergent prices in October across its Wheel, Surf Excel, and Rin brands, with hikes ranging from about 2.2% to 7.1% on various pack sizes. Several products have seen multiple increases this year (up to four for some Surf Excel variants), driven by higher input costs such as elevated palm oil and packaging expenses. These adjustments span mass to premium segments and form part of the company’s broader efforts to manage cost pressures.

Arman Puri, Director, Hindustan Power, on RBI’s decision to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%.
“The first rate hike in over three years was expected. The more important signal is the shift to calibrated tightening, which tells developers to plan for a cycle of increases and not a single move. Power and infrastructure projects are financed largely through long-tenor debt, so the cost of capital flows directly into the cost of electricity.
A 25 basis point increase is absorbable and does not change project economics on its own. What the sector must now do is price upcoming bids and financing plans for a higher-rate environment. Electricity demand continues to grow strongly, and that will keep capital flowing into new capacity.”
