FII Inflows Cross $3.2 Billion in August, Yet Large-Caps Remain Under Pressure: N. ArunaGiri, Founder & CEO, TrustLine Holdings
Usually, when FII sentiment turns positive, it invariably triggers a sharp rally in large caps, which in turn leads to a visible positive impact on the Nifty and Sensex. That has been the established pattern through previous cycles. But this time, this well-entrenched pattern seems to have broken.
For the first time in many months, FII flows turned positive in July, with net inflows of over US$2 billion. More interestingly, August has witnessed the highest monthly inflows since September 2024, with flows already exceeding US$3.2 billion as of August 30th. Yet, the Nifty continues to trade around 8.2% below its all-time high touched in early Jan’26, even as small- and mid-cap indices are at or near all-time highs. Clearly, the headline FII flow number is doing much less work than it has done in previous cycles. The reason is not far-fetched. One needs to look beyond the headline number and examine the composition of these flows. That is where the clues lie.
In July, only around US$0.7 billion came through the secondary market. The remaining US$1.4 billion+ came through the primary market, largely via QIPs, preferential allotments and IPOs. The pattern has continued in August. More than US$1.2 billion had come through the primary market, while around US$1.9 billion had come through exchanges. So, the actual FII buying through the secondary market over the last two months has been only around US$2.68 billion in total. Primary market money does not necessarily create a broad-based bid for existing listed stocks - it gets absorbed by promoters, companies and PE exits.
But even this does not fully explain the lacklustre performance of the Nifty and Sensex. The added flavour is that FIIs appear to be selectively buying large mid-caps despite elevated valuations, while largely bypassing attractively valued large Financials and IT stocks, which together constitute more than 44% of the Nifty.
The key takeaway is that headline FII flows can be misleading. For a meaningful large-cap rally to materialize, we probably need a much stronger and broader turnaround in secondary-market FII flows, particularly into the index heavyweights. That looks unlikely at this point, though it cannot be ruled out. Until then, it remains party time for the broader small and mid-cap markets.

Gold, silver outlook: Gold may rally towards $4,700 if it sustains above $4,500; silver could retest $71 on a break above $67
Rupsha Chainani, chief research officer at Augmont, writes - Price Movement – Gold capped off August with a 9.4% gain, while silver surged 15% — the strongest monthly performance for gold, both in percentage terms and outright dollar gains, since February. That momentum hit some turbulence in the final stretch of the month, though, as Fed Chair Warsh’s hawkish tone at Jackson Hole combined with fresh flare-ups in the Strait of Hormuz to push oil prices higher and stoke inflation concerns — putting pressure on precious metals just as the month wound down.
· Geopolitical tensions – Tensions with Iran reignited on Monday after the first direct exchange of strikes in a month, prompting President Trump to warn of further military action — a sharp turn for a standoff that had, until recently, been playing out mostly on the economic front. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump also weighed in on monetary policy, saying he holds Warsh in high regard and trusts him to “do what he has to do” on interest rates.
· Macro-Economic Signals – Markets have a busy data week ahead, with job openings, the ADP employment report, and nonfarm payrolls all due — each likely to be picked apart for signs of where the labor market, and by extension the Fed’s next move, is headed. Per the CME FedWatch Tool, traders are currently pricing in a 66% chance of a rate hike in September, climbing to an 89% probability by December.
Technical Triggers
· Gold’s sharp climb from $4,000 to $4,680 has since cooled, with prices retracing to the 38.2% Fibonacci level near $4,400–4,410. That zone should act as support for now — but a break below opens the door to further downside toward $4,315 and $4,235. On the flip side, a sustained move above $4,500 could set up a fresh rally toward $4,700 and eventually $4,900.
· Silver has followed a similar arc, pulling back to around $66 after its run from $55 to $71. Holding above this level keeps the setup intact; a breakdown could send prices toward $63 and $61. If silver instead pushes and holds above $67, look for a renewed push toward $71 and $76.

Commodities Commentary | Manav Modi Commodities Analyst Motilal Oswal Financial services Ltd
Gold prices steadied on Monday after falling more than 3.5% over the previous two sessions, as investors balanced renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East against expectations of tighter U.S. monetary policy.
The latest escalation saw U.S. forces strike Iranian rocket launchers near the Strait of Hormuz, followed by Iranian attacks on targets in the UAE and Jordan, raising concerns over potential disruptions to global energy supplies. Oil prices extended gains after recording their strongest rise in three weeks, reinforcing inflation worries and strengthening the case for the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates elevated for longer.
Markets are currently pricing in more than a 60% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the Fed’s September meeting. Despite the recent correction, gold remains on track to register nearly a 10% gain in August, supported by strong safe-haven demand, central-bank buying and concerns surrounding U.S. fiscal sustainability.
The Treasury’s recent intervention in the bond market and the country’s growing debt burden have kept the debasement trade alive, encouraging investors to view gold as a hedge against long-term currency weakness and sovereign debt risks.
However, some signs of profit-taking have emerged, with gold-backed ETFs recording modest outflows late last week as markets reassess the outlook for interest rates and inflation. Focus this week will be on US Jobs market data
