The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to list an application alleging that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pushed a pregnant journalist during a march to the apex court on October 12.

Orally mentioning the application before Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia said the woman journalist was manhandled in the Supreme Court premises.

On October 12, Gandhi led the march to the Supreme Court, where he and a few Opposition bloc leaders marked their physical presence in the Supreme Court Registry as petitioners in their plea seeking an independent probe into allegations of arbitrary use of power by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and suspension of the Special Intensive Revision process.

Supreme Court March

The court premises had been filled with lawyers and journalists while a huge crowd was stopped outside by the Supreme Court security detail.

Bhatia submitted on Friday that the woman journalist was three months’ pregnant and had to be hospitalised.

The senior advocate had raised the same allegation against Gandhi in an apex court hearing held on October 15. The hearing on Thursday had also witnessed Bhatia represent a petition which accused Gandhi of leading a “political procession” into the Supreme Court on October 12 in a bid to “browbeat” the judiciary. The petition had sought criminal contempt action to be initiated against Gandhi and other Opposition leaders.

While making clear that “no one can browbeat the judiciary”, the Bench of Chief Justice Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi had issued notice on that petition.

On Friday, the Chief Justice said the application about the alleged conduct of Mr. Gandhi towards the woman journalist may be heard either on October 26 or the next day.

The court is closed for Dussehra vacations the whole of next week.
