Orgo-Life the new way to the future

São Paulo — A cool Friday between 14°C and 22°C, cloudy in the morning with possible drizzle and brighter later. It is the coldest of the next four days by a clear margin.

MASP opens until nine tonight and entry is free from six, in addition to its free Tuesdays. Booking online is required even on free days.

Today’s driving restriction covers plates ending 9 and 0. It applies from seven to ten in the morning and five to eight in the evening inside the expanded centre.

The SP Open reaches its quarter-finals at Parque Villa-Lobos. Ground passes cost R$30, about US$6, from today through Sunday.

Weather & What to Wear
FOUR-DAY OUTLOOK

Friday runs between 14°C and 22°C with cloud, possible morning drizzle and brighter conditions later. It is the coolest day of the four by eight degrees at the top end.

Saturday warms to 26°C with showers arriving in the evening. Sunday carries a storm warning and Monday reaches 30°C with heavy rain at night and gusts to sixty kilometres an hour.

A jacket is genuinely useful today and will be useless by Monday. Plan the weekend outdoors for Saturday rather than Sunday.

02
Day at a Glance
SNAPSHOT

  • Free from 6pm — MASP on Avenida Paulista, open until nine, with online booking required.
  • Full price R$85, about US$17 — MASP daytime entry, half price R$42 or roughly US$8.
  • R$30, about US$6 — a ground pass for the SP Open quarter-finals at Parque Villa-Lobos.
  • Metro and rail fare — a single journey costs R$5.40, roughly US$1.05.
  • Driving restriction — plates ending 9 and 0 are barred from the expanded centre at peak hours.
  • Opening tomorrow — the São Paulo Oktoberfest at the Ibirapuera events arena, running to 4 October.

The free MASP window from six to nine is the single most useful fact in this brief. It is a Friday fixture and consistently the least crowded way into the collection.

The Oktoberfest opens tomorrow rather than today. Some listings have it wrong, and the official calendar starts on Saturday 19 September.

03
What to See & Do
FRIDAY IN SÃO PAULO

MASP opens from ten in the morning until nine at night on Fridays, with free entry from six. Full admission is R$85 and half price R$42, about US$17 and US$8, and online booking is required even when entry is free.

The Pinacoteca opens Wednesday to Monday from ten until six, with last entry at five, and closes on Tuesdays. It is showing Ismael Nery: armadilha moderna alongside Luana Vitra’s Bandeira Branca.

The Museu do Ipiranga opens Tuesday to Sunday from ten until five, with last entry at four. Entry is free every Wednesday and on the first Sunday of each month.

Farol Santander opens Tuesday to Sunday from nine until eight, with last entry at seven. The Museu da Língua Portuguesa runs Tuesday to Sunday from nine until half past four.

The SP Open reaches its quarter-finals today at Parque Villa-Lobos in Alto de Pinheiros. The tournament runs to Sunday and ground passes cost R$30, about US$6.

04
Getting Around
TRANSPORT

A single metro or rail journey costs R$5.40, roughly US$1.05. The network runs a normal Friday service.

Today’s driving restriction covers plates ending 9 and 0. It applies from seven to ten in the morning and five to eight in the evening, inside the expanded central zone.

Parque Villa-Lobos is reached from Vila Lobos-Jaguaré station on the rail network. Driving there on a restricted plate day is the avoidable mistake.

Avenida Paulista is busiest between six and eight on a Friday evening. That coincides exactly with the free MASP window, so arrive early if you want the galleries quiet.

05
Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER

The Avenida Paulista lunch trade runs from noon until about two and thins quickly. Anyone planning the free MASP window should eat before six rather than after nine.

Pinheiros and Vila Madalena remain the densest areas for a Friday dinner. Both are close to Parque Villa-Lobos by rail.

The Mercado Municipal is a lunch destination rather than an evening one. It closes in the early evening and is best visited before two.

Reservations are worth making after seven on a Friday. Before that, walking in is usually possible even in the busier streets.

06
Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW

Sunset falls at two minutes past six. That leaves very little daylight after the working day, which is one reason the free MASP window works so well.

The Pinacoteca closes on Tuesdays and the Museu do Ipiranga on Mondays. Neither affects today but both catch visitors on longer stays.

Card payment and instant bank transfer are accepted almost everywhere. Cash is needed only at some market stalls.

The driving restriction is enforced by camera and the fine arrives by post. Rental cars are not exempt.

07
Community & Lifestyle
FOR NEWCOMERS

The free Friday evening at MASP is the easiest cultural habit to adopt in this city. It costs nothing and runs every week of the year.

São Paulo’s museums are cheaper than their equivalents in most large cities and better funded than they look. Several have a free day as well as a free evening.

The SP Open is a rare chance to see professional tennis here at a low price. A ground pass at R$30, about US$6, is unusual for a tour event.

Five municipalities in the state remain under a state of emergency after flooding in the Vale do Ribeira. That is well outside the city but worth knowing if you are travelling south.

08
Game Day
THE WEEKEND ROUND

The SP Open quarter-finals are today at Parque Villa-Lobos, with the final on Sunday. The seeded field includes Leylah Fernandez, Paula Badosa and Yulia Putintseva.

There is no Brasileirão football today. Round 28 falls on Sunday, when Palmeiras host Grêmio.

Palmeiras reached the Copa Libertadores semi-finals on Wednesday, beating LDU Quito 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 aggregate draw. They face Fluminense in the semi-final.

São Paulo went out of the Copa Sudamericana to Boca Juniors on Monday, drawing 1-1 at the Morumbi and losing 2-1 on aggregate. Corinthians were eliminated by Estudiantes.

09
Business & Markets
WEEK IN FIGURES

The Ibovespa closed Thursday at 185,992 points, up 0.24 percent, after an intraday fall of more than one percent. The dollar ended at R$5.1289, down 0.48 percent.

The central bank cut the Selic to 13.75 percent on Wednesday, the fifth consecutive quarter-point reduction. The United States Federal Reserve raised its own rate the same day.

Ibovespa (B3) daily candlestick chart

State prosecutors said this week that organised crime controls twelve of the city’s twenty-two bus companies. They have sought an arrest warrant for a city councillor in connection with the case.

In corporate news, the merger between the state water utility and the state power generator cleared its final shareholder vote. It is the largest restructuring in the state’s utility sector this year.

10
Plan Ahead
THE WEEK

The São Paulo Oktoberfest opens tomorrow at the Ibirapuera events arena and runs to 4 October. Hours are five until eleven on Fridays and two until eleven at weekends.

The SP Open final is on Sunday afternoon. Ground passes stay at R$30, about US$6, through the weekend.

Palmeiras host Grêmio on Sunday in round 28 of the league. The competition then breaks for two weeks.

The first round of the presidential election falls on Sunday 4 October. Expect changes to transport and opening hours across the city that weekend.
