A Ryanair passenger was injured after being partially sucked through a smashed window, according to witnesses - the flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen suffered a mid-air engine emergency

A Ryanair flight suffered a mid-air emergency with debris reportedly smashing a window and injuring a passenger - who witnesses say was partially 'sucked' through.

The flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen, in Germany, returned to Greece this morning following the incident in which debris is understood to have come from the aircraft's engine and hit the window.

The pilot noticed an issue over North Macedonia and decided to return to Thessaloniki. It was during the descent that part of the damaged engine reportedly detached and struck a cabin window, causing minor injuries to a passenger.

A witness told the German Press Agency (dpa) a window smashed, as seen in videos circulating on social media. A man seated next to the window was 'sucked' through, according to BILD. Another eyewitness told Greek broadcaster ERT: "His head and shoulders were sticking out of the broken window."

The return journey after the incident is said to have taken about 20 minutes after the pilot decided to turnaround and return to Thessaloniki.

The injured passenger, a 61-year-old man from Serbia, was then said to have been taken by the emergency services to a hospital in Thessaloniki. He has suffered a neck wound from the impact as well as bruising to other parts of his body and in shock but was conscious, reported De Telegraaf.

A Ryanair statement read: "A Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen on Friday morning (10 July) returned to Thessaloniki shortly after take-off when a passenger window dislodged inflight. The aircraft landed normally and passengers returned to the terminal.

"One passenger requested and received medical assistance on the ground in Thessaloniki. In order to minimise any delay, a replacement aircraft was arranged to bring passengers to Memmingen which departed Thessaloniki at 9:53 local this morning."
