Mercedes has made the perfect start to the new Formula 1 season, while crowd favourite Oscar Piastri crashed before his home grand prix even began.

George Russell withstood an epic early battle for the lead to win, ahead of his teammate Kimi Antonelli.

Piastri crashed on his lap to the grid, 30 minutes before the start of the race, shattering the hopes for the enormous home crowd at Albert Park.

Russell started on pole, but lost the lead at the first corner as Ferrari's Charles Leclerc made a terrific launch from fourth.

Russell and Antonelli pitted under the first of three virtual safety cars, while Ferrari pitted both drivers midway through the race under full racing conditions.

The time advantage gained by Mercedes by pitting under the VSC guided the Silver Arrows to a 1-2 finish.

Leclerc finished third, with teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth.

McLaren's Lando Norris finished fifth and Red Bull's Max Verstappen sixth, the only other drivers to finish on the lead lap.

"It was a hell of a fight at the beginning. I made a bad start, and some really tight battles with Charles at the start," Russell said.

"Just really glad to cross the finish line."

Australian Piastri never made it to the start. The Australian spun his McLaren on the way to the grid and crashed.

Piastri was supposed to start fifth, trying to become the first Australian to win his home F1 race.

But he spun on the lap to the grid, with initial suggestions that his McLaren had a sudden surge of energy he was not expecting.

After Leclerc made a stunning start and took the lead, he and Russell swapped positions multiple times over 10 thrilling laps.

Hamilton stayed on the back of their battle, while Antonelli suffered a poor start and dropped as low as seventh.

Mercedes pitted both drivers when a virtual safety car was called on lap 11 following Isack Hadjar's Red Bull breaking down.

Ferrari opted to keep both drivers out, and again chose to keep their drivers out despite VSCs called twice more in the opening 20 laps.

Instead, Ferrari pitted Leclerc (lap 25) and Hamilton (lap 28) under green flag conditions, conceding a massive gap to the Mercedes duo that they never threatened.

Oliver Bearman was seventh for Haas, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Linblad was eighth on his F1 debut.

Audi scored points in their debut grand prix as a team and manufacturer with Gabriel Bortoleto claiming ninth. Alpine's Pierre Gasly was 10th.

Both Aston Martins lasted longer than the 25 laps predicted by team boss Adrian Newey, but as expected, failed to finish the grand prix.

Oscar Piastri on what happened on his lap to the grid

The biggest story of the day was Oscar Piastri not even starting his home grand prix.

The Melbourne-born McLaren driver went spinning into the wall at turn four, ending his race more than 30 minutes before it began.

The Australian says the team will do a full investigation, but he believes his car had a surge of power that he was not ready for.

"We need to review fully what happened. I got on the kerb a little bit, but from what we've seen as well … essentially, I had 100 kilowatts more power than I've had the whole weekend, at the point that I shifted.

"When I shifted, went into wheel spin, and given I was on the kerb already, it was a combination of bad factors.

"Things like that shouldn't be happening anywhere but especially at my home race, it's even more disappointing."

Charles Leclerc reflects on Australian Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc finished third today.

The Ferrari driver was involved in a great battle for the lead early in the race.

Ferrari's pit strategy hurt them today.

"It was a very, very tricky race. None of us knew what to expect," Leclerc said.

"It has been quite challenging. It was a fun first part of the race.

"It looked like Mercedes had a bit more pace than us today, but not as much as yesterday, so that is a good thing."

Kimi Antonelli started second, but had a shocking start and dropped to seventh.

But the young Italian recovered well and finished second, about four seconds behind his victorious teammate.

"Was not the best start we could have wished for," Antonelli said.

"Lost a lot of places and I had to recover.

"But overall was a good race, the pace was really strong, especially at the end."
