A controversy has erupted after the Karnataka government issued an invitation in Urdu, prompting the BJP to allege appeasement politics by the Congress.
The invitation was related to a key Health Department programme to launch preventive treatment and free ambulance services for haemophilia patients. In addition to Kannada and English, the Department of Health and Family Welfare also released the invitation in Urdu.
The BJP termed the decision appeasement politics and asked why the invitation needed to be published in Urdu. The party alleged that the government had created a new precedent in the name of minority appeasement.
Citing the Karnataka Official Language Act, the BJP pointed out that Urdu does not have official status in the state. It accused the government of issuing invitations in a language that is not recognised as an official administrative language in Karnataka.
