Top Rice Imports by CountryUncooked white rice

Global demand for imported rice resulted in US$38.3 billion worth of sales in 2024.

The overall value of rice imports from all buyer countries grew by an average 42.1% since 2020 when worldwide rice purchases cost $27 billion.

Year over year, globally imported rice accelerated by 10.1% compared to $34.8 billion in international purchases during 2023.

The top 5 countries for importing rice are Indonesia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Iraq. Combined, those 5 major rice buyers generated over one quarter (27.7%) of worldwide demand for imported rice.

Applying a continental lens, Asian countries consumed the highest dollar worth of imported rice during 2024 with purchases valued at $19.1 billion or half (50%) of the global total. In second place were importers located in Africa at 21.1% while another 13.6% of worldwide rice imports was delivered to buyers in Europe.

Smaller percentages were accepted by importers in North America (6.93%), Latin America (6.92%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, then Oceanian countries (1.4%) led by Australia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for rice is 1006.

Below are the 15 countries that imported the highest dollar value worth of rice during 2024.

  1. Indonesia: US$2.7 billion (7.1% of total rice imports)
  2. Philippines: $2.5 billion (6.6%)
  3. Saudi Arabia: $2 billion (5.2%)
  4. Vietnam: $1.71 billion (4.5%)
  5. Iraq: $1.66 billion (4.3%)
  6. United States: $1.62 billion (4.2%)
  7. Malaysia: $1.1 billion (2.9%)
  8. Ivory Coast: $1 billion (2.6%)
  9. mainland China: $920.7 million (2.4%)
  10. Senegal: $783.8 million (2%)
  11. United Kingdom: $756.4 million (2%)
  12. Iran: $711.9 million (1.9%)
  13. Benin: $705.7 million (1.8%)
  14. France: $686.1 million (1.8%)
  15. United Arab Emirates: $685.8 million (1.8%)

The top 15 countries purchased over half (51.1%) of all rice imported during 2024. Imported rice remains in demand from importing geographies located around the globe.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing markets for rice since 2023 were: Vietnam (up 93.1%), Senegal (up 57.4%), Philippines (up 54%) and Indonesia (up 51.5%).

A pair of leading buyer countries posted declines in their imported rice purchases, namely Iran (down -48.5% from 2023) and mainland China (down -34.6%).

After expanding the scope of our analysis to the top 100 rice importers, there were 71 gainers from 2023 to 2024.

Increasing their spending on imported rice the most were Nigeria (up 39,727% since 2023), Dominican Republic (up 766.4%), Sri Lanka (up 400.3%), Cameroon (up 109.2%) and Vietnam (up 93.1%).

The severest year-over-year declines in imported rice purchases belonged to buyers in Ghana (down -54.8% from 2023), Iran (down -48.5%), Cuba (down -43.8%), Türkiye (down -42.1%) then Djibouti (down -38.2%).

Rice Imports into Indonesia

Below are the top suppliers from which Indonesia imported the highest dollar value worth of rice during 2024. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country compared to 2023.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing suppliers of rice to Indonesia since 2023 were: Myanmar (up 441.3%), India (up 250.8%), mainland China (up 169.9%) and Pakistan (up 159.1%).

Overall, the value of Indonesia’s rice imports accelerated by an average 51.5% from all supplying countries since 2023 when rice purchases were valued at $1.8 billion.

Rice Imports into the Philippines

Countries that experienced declines in the value of their rice supplied to Saudi importers included: Bangladesh (down -55.2% from 2023), Portugal (down -36.7%), Italy (down -31.8%) and Argentina (down -29.1%).

Overall, the value of Saudi Arabian’s rice imports rose by an average 19.4% from all supplying countries since 2023 when rice purchases were valued at $1.7 billion.

Rice Imports into the United States

Below are the top suppliers from which the United States of America imported the highest dollar value worth of rice during 2024. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country compared to 2023.

Overall, the value of America’s rice imports increased by an average 13.6% from all supplying countries since 2023 when rice purchases were valued at $1.4 billion.
