There are many solutions for adding cargo mounts to frames without threaded bosses, but few are designed for frames with the wide, flat-bottomed downtubes commonly found on alloy and carbon mountain bikes. Revelate Designs set out to address this with some nifty minimalist TPU mounts called the Underpackers.
The Underpackers are designed specifically for carbon and aluminum frames with wide, flat downtubes that make it tricky to mount other options. The TPU mounts are integrated with the included Voile-style straps, which loop around the downtube to secure your bottle, pot, poles, and other cylindrical items against your frame. According to Revelate, Underpackers offer a significant weight advantage over cargo cages and are practically indestructible.
Neil used the Underpackers on his recent Colorado Trail ride, and here’s what he had to say about them: “What I really like is that the system is highly adjustable without sacrificing security. Once the straps are installed around the downtube, you can slide them up or down to find the ideal position. From there, you place the bottle, cinch everything tight, and tuck the excess strap into the pad’s slits or behind the bottle. That’s it. The TPU grips the frame, and you are ready to ride. I rode through some seriously rough terrain with a full bottle, and the Underpackers never slipped or moved. Better yet, the bottle remained easy to reach and remove when you need that extra capacity.”
The included straps are 18” (458mm) long and fit a maximum downtube circumference of 240mm with a 90mm max diameter bottle, or the size of a Nalgene. The Underpackers weigh just 70 grams (2.5 ounces) per pair and cost $29 USD.
