Almost every smartphone launched in 2026 in the ₹35,000 – ₹50,000 has tried to find a niche, whether it’s camera performance, design or raw power. If I can think of one word to describe the 17 Pro Max, it’s endurance. That word can mean different things to different users, but if there are two key endurance factors that define this smartphone, it’s battery life and durability.

It’s not an easy sell; the 17 Pro Max takes over from the Xiaomi 15 Pro Plus,. which features a better chipset and rear camera. Xiaomi is hoping that the new upgrades in the battery and durability departments can compensate for its limitations in other areas. As I found out after a fortnight with the 17 Pro Max, that might well boil down to what your primary purchase drivers are.

Design

You’ll never guess that the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max houses a massive battery when you hold this device in your hand. Xiaomi opts for a flat design with curved edges that make the device easy to clasp. It’s under 9 mm thick and weighs 229 g; Xiaomi has done a good job with the weight management and overall ergonomics to ensure this device doesn’t feel like a brick.

Xiaomi calls it a “high-strength fiberglass back panel,” the rear panel looks refined and doesn’t feel slippery thanks to the matte finish. It survived my drop tests (Xiaomi claims it’s ready for drops up to 3 metres) on a wooden floor. I also used a water jet spray to test Xiaomi’s IP66/IP68/IP68/IP69K ratings for dust and water resistance. The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max sailed through both tests unscarred, validating Xiaomi’s endurance claims.

Display

The display is one of the areas where the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max surpasses its predecessor. While most of the specs are the same, the improved peak brightness is a welcome change. You get a 6.83 inch AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution (2772 x 1280 pixels / 120 Hz refresh rate).

The peak brightness now reaches 3500 nits, with excellent visibility across lighting scenarios. The 17 Pro Max offers Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support across platforms like Netflix. I watched the Nimisha Sajayan starrer Babita Singh Reporting on Amazon Prime Video, and the 17 Pro Max did a great job with colour reproduction.

Camera

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max opts for an uncomplicated camera setup that combines a 50 MP primary lens with an 8 MP ultrawide, and there’s also a 32 MP selfie camera in the mix. While images shot with the primary lens are generally good across lighting conditions, the video performance is just average.

The primary cam does a good job with portraits and low-light scenarios thanks to optical image stabilisation. The ultra-wide camera is one of the weak links in the camera; this is a compromise we’ve seen with multiple devices in this segment this year.

Performance

We’ve seen quite a few brands resort to extreme measures to cope with the rising input costs and RAM shortages. Xiaomi seems to have taken a step back with its choice of chipset, opting for a Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 processor. You get a choice of 8GB/256GB and 12GB/256GB storage variants.

Extreme gamers are unlikely to be impressed with the performance. It clocked just under 3000 in our Geekbench 7 (multi-core) benchmark test, which doesn’t put it in the top tier in its class. While this might work well for most average users, it is not for heavy-duty users. The device is powered by Hyper OS 3, which is built on Android 16. You get quite a few customisation options, but the pre-installed apps are a dampener. Xiaomi offers four years of OS updates that puts it ahead of some of its rivals.

Battery

Think of the 10,000 mAh battery under the hood of the 17 Pro Max as a power bank inside a smartphone. This is easily the device’s strongest selling point, a battery that outclasses most of the competition. It comfortably lasts two days despite heavy usage. Xiaomi has bundled a 100W charger in the box that powers this device in about 80 minutes – impressive. It’s not just an antidote to battery anxiety but can also power your other devices thanks to 27W reverse charging.

Verdict

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max doesn’t compare favourably with its predecessor on the performance and camera fronts, but it makes some significant upgrades in areas that enhance its reputation as an endurance champ. This device is geared for anyone who needs a rugged smartphone with an Energiser-bunny-type battery that complements a vibrant display. It might be a tough sell at its price tag for users looking for a more well-rounded smartphone.
