Orgo-Life the new way to the future

Garry Richardson (England’s 1966 World Cup heroes were fun, humble and unlike today’s stars, 30 July) appears to make the assumption that everyone watched the 1966 World Cup final on television with Kenneth Wolstenholme’s iconic commentary. As a football-mad 10-year-old, I had the misfortune on the day of the final to be on our family summer holiday in the then sleepy village of Goathland, staying in a house with no TV.

Hope rose when my dad was invited to watch the final at a neighbour’s who had one of the few TVs in the village and he asked if he could bring his children. When the neighbour learned that there were seven of us, he not surprisingly drew the line at a still very generous three, but as the fourth in line I missed out.

Instead, I sat in the kitchen along with my mam and three younger sisters listening to the rarely mentioned but equally brilliant Brian Moore and Alan Clarke’s commentary on BBC radio. To this day, I still haven’t seen the match but nevertheless, like Garry, cherish my happy memories of it.
