Prateek Yadav, younger son of Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and husband of BJP leader Aparna Bisht Yadav, passed away at 38 in Lucknow on Wednesday morning (May 13, 2026) after falling ill.

He was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Lucknow, where doctors declared him brought dead. He was the stepbrother of Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party.

The postmortem conducted at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) revealed that Mr. Yadav died due to a massive blockage in the blood vessels of the lungs, leading to a collapse of the heart and respiratory system. The provisional cause of death is cardiorespiratory collapse due to massive pulmonary embolism.

The chief medical superintendent of Lucknow Civil Hospital said, “A medical officer was sent to Mr. Yadav’s residence after somebody from his household came to the hospital at 5.30 a.m. seeking urgent medical assistance.”

“We are deeply saddened by this loss. He was a long-standing patient of ours; I had been treating him for high blood pressure. He was admitted here a few days ago after developing a pulmonary embolism — a condition in which a blood clot travels into and lodges within the arteries. Due to the blockage in his lungs, his heart function was adversely affected. He had sought treatment complaining of shortness of breath and was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism which is by its very nature, inherently critical and carries significant risk. He was already on blood thinners, fully aware of his medical issues and took his blood pressure medication regularly...” said Dr. Ruchita Sharma, from Medanta Hospital, Lucknow.

CM visits home

U.P. CM Yogi Adityanath visited Mr. Yadav’s residence and expressed his grief in a post on X: “the sudden demise of Mr. Prateek Yadav, son of the late Mulayam Singh Yadav, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and ‘Padma Vibhushan’, and husband of Mrs. Aparna Yadav, Vice Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission, is deeply saddening. Humble condolences. My condolences are with the bereaved family. We pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant salvation to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense sorrow. Om Shanti.”

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav visited King George’s Medical University (KGMU), where Prateek Yadav’s body has been kept for the post-mortem. Mr. Yadav said setbacks in business are distressing. “I always told him to take care of his health and continue to work towards the progress of his business. Sometimes financial losses or business setbacks leave people extremely distressed. He is no longer among us. We will follow the legal course available to us,” said the SP president.

Prateek Yadav’s mother Sadhana Gupta, was the second wife of the late SP founder. Sadhana Gupta died in July 2022 after a brief illness. The deceased completed his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Leeds University, England, and was a fitness enthusiast. The 38-year-old frequently posted about his gym routine and fitness. Despite hailing from a prominent political family, he chose to stay out of politics.
