Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga (right) was left shocked by the news Queensland will not have Tom Dearden for Origin. (NRL)
Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga was left stunned after his side's big win over St George Illawarra, being told Queensland will be without halfback Tom Dearden for State of Origin.
It was confirmed by the North Queensland Cowboys that Dearden, the Wally Lewis Medallist from the Maroons' series win last year, will be out for up to eight weeks after suffering a syndesmosis injury and needing surgery.
Ponga, who is firmly in the mix to be selected by the Maroons for the first game on May 27, starred at fullback as the Knights condemned the Dragons to a 13th consecutive loss in the NRL.
Taking part in the post-match press conference, Ponga was left shocked when he learned Queensland would be without Dearden.
“S***... f***,” he mumbled under his breath.
“That’s pretty bad. I feel for Tommy, he’s been playing good footy.
"I know how hard he works, how much he loves his footy, how much he loves Queensland, he’s going to be shattered.
"I think Queensland’s going to be shattered."
Ponga's reaction followed a terrific performance from the Knights, where winger Greg Marzhew scored five tries in a 34-point win.
Manly's resurgence under interim coach Kieran Foran has continued with an impressive 28-point win over an injury-ravaged Brisbane Broncos at Brookvale Oval.

Manly's win was soured with two-time premiership-winner Siosiua Taukeiaho being stretchered off with a suspected lower leg fracture and taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, South Sydney winger Alex Johnston scored a hat-trick as the Rabbitohs convincingly beat the Cronulla Sharks.
Johnston, the all-time leading try-scorer, now has 100 four-pointers at Stadium Australia.

Ezra Mam joins ABC Sport after Brisbane's big loss
Brisbane five-eighth Ezra Mam has joined ABC Sport.
He said the Broncos struggled to gain any momentum tonight at Brookvale Oval.
It was a bit tough to just get into the game. Full credit to Manly who had too much line-speed for us.
Mam was asked if Brisbane's injury toll, which is one of the worst in the league, had an effect on them tonight.
I don't think it had much of an impact. It'd be good to have some of the players that we have out on the field, but we've prided ourselves on that next man up mentality, and over the last two weeks we haven't been able to execute what we have game planned.

Manly's Brandon Wakeham joins ABC Sport
Manly hooker Brandon Wakeham has joined ABC Sport after the Sea Eagles beat the Broncos at Brookvale Oval.
It was a win in Jake Trbojevic 250th NRL match, something Wakeham said his teammates were very aware of.
"It's real good, especially for Jake (Trbojevic) in his 250th. I think the boys got up for that one."
Manly's win was soured by the suspected broken ankle to Siosiua Taukeiaho, who was stretchered off the field.
Wakeham told ABC Sport the Sea Eagles lifted after seeing their mate taken from the field.
"When the boys seen him go off, the chat in the huddle was to lift for him, and lift for Jake again, and the boys did that."

FT: Manly Sea Eagles 32 def. Brisbane Broncos 4
— reporting by AAP
Manly veteran Siua Taukeiaho faces a fight to continue his NRL career after the two-time premiership winner was taken to hospital with a suspected lower-leg fracture.
On a night where teenage halfback Joey Walsh again showed why he is a star of the future, the Sea Eagles' oldest player suffered a devastating blow when scoring a try in the 32-4 win over Brisbane.
Charging onto a ball from close to the line after halftime, Taukeiaho's leg twisted beneath two Broncos defenders as he fought to get the ball down.
The off-contract 34-year-old was given the pain-relieving green whistle as he lay stricken on the ground, before being stretchered off the field in a medicab.
Taukeiaho's injury soured what was an otherwise brilliant Saturday night for Manly at Brookvale Oval, who have now won five of six matches since Kieran Foran took over as coach.
Albeit against a depleted Broncos who were wasteful with most of their attacking opportunities, Manly's defence had real punch and physicality.
Haumole Olakau'atu spent 80 minutes whacking visiting players, at one stage flattening Reece Walsh in a moment that summed up the second half.
So much has Manly's defence improved, they have now conceded 82 points in six games under Foran compared to 98 in the first three matches before Anthony Seibiold was sacked.
In attack, the Sea Eagles are clicking and now entrenched in the NRL's top eight.
Starting for just the second time in the NRL, Joey Walsh scored Manly's first try when he ran through a gaping hole from close distance.
He also kicked a massive first-half 40-20, and helped the Sea Eagles regain possession at a crucial point in the first half with a pinpoint perfect short dropout.
Tolu Koula was a threat after being moved back to left centre, while five-eighth Luke Brooks is playing as well now as any point since he joined Manly in 2024.
Brooks helped lay on one try, when he ran it on the last and went short side before the much-improved Brandon Wakeham sent Hopoate over.
Koula also finished the night with a try, when Wakeham chipped ahead for stand-in fullback Clayton Faualalo, who found Koula on the inside to score.
Brisbane, in comparison, was ordinary.
Even with more than 10 players out through injury, there was little excuse for their poor handling in attack.
The defending premiers squandered almost every good opportunity, with their only points coming from a Walsh cut-out ball for winger Antonio Verhoeven early in the match.
But they completed at just 47 per cent in an error-riddled second half, leaving them with only two tackles in Manly's 20-metre zone.

Former Bronco Ethan Bullemor thought he was going to score.
He ran to the goal-line, but referee Gerard Sutton has called obstruction.

69' More and more errors for the Broncos
Nothing is working for the Broncos.
In back-to-back sets, they have lost the ball at halfway.
The first one was when Jordan Riki never attempted a short pass from Tom Duffy.
In the next set, Xavier Willison made a really strong run, but then lost the footy when he hit the ground.
That has been the story of Brisbane's evening.

59' TRY: Manly score on of the best tries in 2026
Manly has turned defence into attack, and they have surely won the game.
An unnecessary and hurried offload from Brisbane's Aublix Tawha is dropped by Reece Walsh.
Manly's Brandon Wakeham picks up the footy and immediately chips ahead.
Clayton Faulalo catches the ball and then passes to fullback Tolutau Koula, and Koula will run to the left corner and score.

52' Brisbane's errors are mounting
Brisbane has been its own worst enemy tonight.
They were pinned on their goal-line, and had five tackles inside their own 20-metre line.
Instead of kicking clear, Brisbane tries to run on the final play, and there is a drop ball.
The Broncos are able to survive on the next defensive set, but the Sea Eagles are on top.

Stretcher is out for Siosiua Taukeiaho
Siosiua Taukeiaho has not got up after scoring for Manly.
There was muted celebration from Sea Eagles players, as they could see Taukeiaho was in a lot of pain.
