Singapore/Bali: Bali police say they are still investigating whether an Australian man gunned down inside a luxury villa was the intended target or the victim of a botched hit.

Zivan Radmanovic was shot dead by masked intruders in the early hours of June 14 as his terrified wife, Jazmyn Gourdeas, hid under the covers.

The couple was in Bali for both a belated honeymoon and to celebrate Gourdeas’ 30th birthday, according to her lawyers.

Another Melbourne man, 34-year-old Sanar Ghanim, the former partner of Danielle Stephens, who is the stepdaughter of slain underworld figure Carl Williams, was shot in the leg and beaten during the same attack inside the villa and survived.

Dudut Rustyadi, a forensic doctor at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar, said Radmanovic was shot in the chest, stomach, buttock and palm.

As is customary in Bali, the three Australians who were detained within days of the killing, and then charged with pre-meditated murder, were paraded before the media on Thursday in handcuffs, masks and prison-orange T-shirts.

Police revealed they would allege Sydney plumber, Darcy Francesco Jenson, 27, organised the rental vehicles and waited in a Ford Ranger outside the villa while Paea I Middlemore Tupou and Mevlut Coskun carried out the killing.

Investigators alleged that after the shooting, the two executioners fled on rented motorbikes and later joined Jenson in the car, which was found dumped in the Tabanan area.

Bali Police Chief Daniel Aditya Jaya said an empty handgun and bullets were found in an irrigation or drainage channel about 700 metres from the car.

He alleged Coskun and Tupou tested positive for gun residue after they were detained in Singapore and Cambodia, respectively.

“Because of the meticulous planning and the way they organised and carried out the [alleged] murder, we believe this is pre-meditated murder,” Daniel said. “We believe these three are the perpetrators.”

The trio may be executed if convicted.

The case has rocked Bali, which is accustomed to misbehaving Australians, but not murders. Police said they were yet to establish a motive for Radmanovic’s killing, while his wife, Gourdeas, told the investigators, “I don’t know who [would want my husband dead] … I also want closure – I want to know,” according to her lawyers.

Asked if it was possible Radmanovic was the victim of bumbling hitmen, Bali Police spokesman Ariasandy said detectives were “still investigating that”.

When queried if the suspects had evidence on their phones – pictures or names – that could identify their target, he said, “investigators are doing a follow-up on that”.

In the press conference, police chief Daniel said Jenson had been in Bali since April. Coskun and Tupou entered Indonesia on June 9 – both were picked up from Surabaya, on the eastern side of the island of Java, and driven to Bali, he said.

Radmanovic and Gourdeas arrived on July 12 for an intended five-day stay, according to Gourdeas’ lawyers. The body of her husband returned to Australia this week.
