The alleged Penn State fraternity cocaine operation is shining a disturbing light on a broader trend emerging in rural America: more young people are turning to powerful stimulant drugs.

Last month, Pennsylvania’s attorney general announced the arrests of 14 men, many of them fraternity members, accused of running a large-scale cocaine distribution network out of off-campus fraternity houses.

According to court records, the alleged organizer, 24-year-old Agostino Abbatiello, posted $250,000 bail and left jail on Sept. 2 after spending more than two weeks in custody.

The allegations come as Centre County Drug and Alcohol Administrator Catherine Arbogast warns that young people are seeking increasingly potent stimulants both on campus and in surrounding communities.

“The reports we’re receiving show that the problem has expanded beyond opiates and opioid-related substances, with stimulant use becoming more common,” she said.

Arbogast said the demand extends well beyond cocaine and prescription drugs such as Adderall.

“We’re encountering methamphetamines, multiple types of stimulants, prescription medications and synthetic substances—products manufactured in laboratories,” she said.

Investigators allege that fraternity pledges were pressured to cut and package cocaine as part of initiation activities in the Penn State case.

Authorities say the drug-cutting process—mixing cocaine with other substances—can create unpredictable and potentially fatal risks for anyone who uses the final product.

“When people are buying drugs, they really don’t know what they’re getting because drugs are mixed, there are combinations of drugs, and so when they take something, they might be getting a stimulant, they might be getting an opioid, which is more of a depressant, or they might be getting a combination of the two,” Arbogast said.

But it’s not just college students who are looking for a fix.

“Stimulant use, opiate use, drug use is a pattern that is happening in rural communities across the state of Pennsylvania and across the United States,” Arbogast said. “It’s not something that just happens in big cities. It’s not something that just happens in more urban areas.”

Abbatiello has a scheduled court arraignment for Sept. 30.
