In an exclusive report from Deadline, it has been confirmed that Paul Dano will work with the Daniels for the first time since 2016’s Swiss Army Man to write and direct a brand new comedy for Universal Pictures.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, along with their partner Jonathan Wang, will produce the project under their Playground banner with Dano also currently in talks to produce. All that is known about the movie at this time is that it will be an original, high-concept comedy and that the Daniels will have a first-look deal with Universal.

Kwan and Scheinert are currently in development on the follow-up to their Best Picture-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, which could mark one of the first major projects where they are solely producing under this deal.

Dano last took to the director’s chair with the 2018 drama Wildlife, which starred Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie garnered positive reviews after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018. In the years since, Dano has primarily stuck to acting with projects such as the Showtime limited series Escape from Dannemora, where he earned an Emmy nomination. He has also recently appeared in Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical movie, The Fabelmans.

The Daniels, on the other hand, have been busy since their directorial debut, Swiss Army Man, broke onto the scene at Sundance 2016. The movie was written and directed by the duo and starred Dano alongside Daniel Radcliffe. Kwan and Scheinert’s second project was the hugely successful Everything Everywhere All at Once, which earned 11 Oscar nominations and seven wins, including Best Director and Original Screenplay.
