As the House tries to discuss the MSME amendment bill, Opposition’s clamour fills the Rajya Sabha. 

Amid sloganeering and protests from Opposition, the House discusses the the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill.

The Bill, which seeks to amend the 2006 Act of the same name, will empower courts to order payment of at least 50% of the awarded amount to MSME suppliers if the application to set aside an order is pending for more than six months. 

Lok Sabha passes Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill by a voice vote. 

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill amid protests by Opposition members. 

The Bill states that the persistent gap between the institution and the disposal of caseshas made docket managementincreasingly difficult, particularly in relation to older pending matters and cases requiring adjudication by larger Benches.

The government said augmenting the court’s strength was among the most effective measures to reduce the backlog of cases.

MoS for Parliamentary Affairs moves Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026. 

The Bill seeks to replace an ordinance that raised the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court from 34 to 38, amid concerns over mounting backlog of cases.

The legislation seeks to replace the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, promulgated in May, to increase the sanctioned strength of the court from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill in Lok Sabha on Monday (August 3).

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh moved Indian Statistical Institute Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday (August 3).

The Bill has been met with strong protests by academicians as well as students of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) who claim that the move is aimed to strip the institute of its academic autonomy by converting it from a “registered society to a statutory body corporate”.

The Union government introduced the Bill in the Lok Sabha to replace an ordinance that raised the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court from 34 to 38, amid concerns over mounting backlog of cases.

Congress MP Manish Tewari on Monday (August 3) submitted an Adjournment Motion notice in the Lok Sabha, seeking an immediate discussion on the necessity of a new Anti-Defection Law to prevent “mass political defections driven by opportunism”.- ANI
