Panama and Venezuela will soon reopen their consular offices in each other’s capitals, according to official announcements from both governments.

This change comes after a year of strained relations that began in July 2024, when Panama cut off diplomatic ties with Venezuela. Panama made this decision right after Venezuela’s presidential election, which saw Nicolás Maduro declared the winner.

The opposition in Venezuela and the Panamanian government questioned the fairness of that vote. After Panama’s decision, both countries stopped most official contact.

Venezuela also suspended flights between the two nations, including those run by Panama’s main airline. This made travel and business more difficult for many people. Flights only started again in May 2025, which helped ease some of the tension.

Consular offices play a key role for citizens living or traveling abroad. They help people with passports, visas, legal documents, and emergencies. Without these services, many Panamanians and Venezuelans in each country faced problems in their daily lives.

The reopening of consular offices will make it easier for them to get the help they need. Both governments say this move is about helping their citizens, not about fixing all their political disagreements.

They have not announced plans to fully restore diplomatic relations. Panama’s president recently said that talks about a full diplomatic relationship are not happening right now.

The focus is only on consular services, not on bigger political issues. This step matters because it makes life easier for people and businesses that depend on travel and official paperwork.

It also shows that, even with political differences, both countries recognize the need to support their citizens. The reopening of consular offices is a practical decision that puts the needs of people first.
