São Paulo’s Pacaembu Stadium, now called Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu, has reopened after its biggest renovation ever. Allegra, a private company, now manages the stadium under a long-term deal.

Mercado Livre, a major online retailer, paid for naming rights. Official figures show the project cost over R$1 billion. The goal: keep the stadium’s football history alive while making it a modern, profitable space.

Pacaembu first opened in 1940. It has hosted famous football matches, including four Copa Libertadores finals. Pelé played here 119 times and scored 115 goals.

The stadium also served as a public gathering place for protests and city events. The recent renovation kept these traditions in mind.

The new guided tour lets visitors see the stands, press area, luxury suites, and changing rooms decorated with shirts from top Brazilian teams. Guests can walk through the tunnel to the pitch, just like players do.

The tour costs R$60, or R$30 for students and seniors. Entry is free on Tuesdays. Each group includes up to 40 people, and tours last about 90 minutes. Organizers expect 4,000 visitors per month.

Pacaembu Stadium Renovation Balances Historic Preservation

The renovation included rebuilding the main stands with over 2,100 custom concrete pieces to match the original design. Allegra also restored old wooden structures and added new spaces for events, a future hotel, and restaurants.

The athletics track and pool remain open to the public. A court allowed the removal of the Tobogã stand, which was not part of the original design.

This cleared the way for new construction, including a hotel set to open in 2026. Pacaembu’s transformation shows how cities can update old landmarks by mixing private investment with respect for history.

The stadium now offers a modern experience while keeping its place in São Paulo’s culture. All details and figures come from official sources and public records, ensuring accuracy for readers worldwide.
