The Keralam Revenue department on Tuesday (October 6, 2026) began surveying land belonging to the University of Kerala (KU) in the State capital on the directions of the Kerala High Court.

Revenue Minister A.P. Anil Kumar told mediapersons that the land was being measured by Revenue and Survey officials not on the directions of the Revenue department, but of the High Court. A report on any increase or decrease in the university’s land, after comparing it with the relevant records in the possession of KU, would be submitted to the court by October 15.

Measurement of the land where the Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s former State headquarters, AKG Centre (the AKG Memorial Research Centre), stood was not under consideration by the department, the Minister clarified.

On the notice issued to the CPI(M) State secretary in connection with the land survey, the Minister said it was routine to inform those who shared boundaries with the land in question when a survey was being conducted. Since the AKG Centre was next to the university land being measured, a notice was issued to them. However, only university land was being measured on the basis of court directions, he added.

The Minister, however, did not respond to questions pertaining to the alleged misuse of the university land, even if assigned, contrary to the purpose of the assignment. The court would give directions based on the department report since it was hearing a petition challenging the land assignment, Mr. Anil Kumar said.

The petition was filed by Save University Campaign Committee chairperson and University of Kerala Syndicate member R.S. Sasikumar.

In a statement on Monday, Mr. Sasikumar had claimed that, on the basis of the High Court directions, land under two survey numbers in the possession of the AKG Centre would also be measured.

The alleged assignment was illegal, unconstitutional, and void, he had argued.
