Seawolf Public House, a community-oriented pub in Oakland, will close July 19, according to owner Monica Plazola.

“Honestly, it’s a little sad and a little overwhelming,” she said.

The gastropub, which opened in 2017 and whose name is an homage to Jack London, has had a series of ups and downs as it struggled to recover following the COVID-19 pandemic. A GoFundMe campaign in late 2023 that raised over $5,000 helped. Hosting events like trivia nights helped too.

And so did creative initiatives announced last year, like renting out the restaurant’s kitchen to Willie Mendez, former executive chef at Luka’s Taproom, and launching a mobile bar to offer bartending and drink catering at events. At the time, Plazola said, “In this new delivery-based economy we’re in, a community pub like ours can only survive if we diversify.”

But this year, Plazola said, “It’s just been tougher.” With a lease up at the end of July, it’s time to close things down.

“We’ve had a lot of love and support from the community and it’s really hard to close the doors, but we have to say goodbye,” she said.

A silent auction will be held 4-8 p.m. on July 12 to help pay outstanding debts. The pub will be selling off its furniture, neon signage, art and memorabilia, plus a pool table and shuffleboard table.

The final trivia session will be held July 16 and the final comedy night and closing night will be July 19.

Details: Open 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday at 350 4th St., Oakland, through July 19; seawolf.pub.
