Any NFL players planning on using extra colorful obscenities or making provocative celebratory gestures this year should probably think again.

According to a report from Mark Maske of Front Office Sports (FOS), the league’s “strict enforcement of sportsmanship-related rules” will continue in the 2026 season.

“The NFL will continue to stress strict enforcement of its sportsmanship-related rules by its on-field officials this season,” Maske wrote.

“That means the officials will be expected to keep a close eye on players violating the league’s rules prohibiting taunting opponents, illegal celebrations and fighting, at the behest of the NFL’s competition committee.”

According to Yahoo Sports, “Taunting penalties are considered a form of unsportsmanlike conduct and result in a 15-yard penalty. They can also carry fines, with a first offense running a player nearly $12,000. A second offense increases that figure to nearly $18,000.

“When the league first introduced the directive last August, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said violent gestures were up 133 percent around the league and sexual taunting was up 52 percent. He urged players to be ‘responsible adults’ when celebrating big plays.”

While few are fans of the more distasteful displays on the field, especially those with a sexual connotation, many fans have lamented the calling of unsportsmanlike and taunting penalties at critical moments that potentially alter the course of a game.

For example, last year, Seattle’s Riq Woolen was called for a taunting penalty on a 4th-and-12 play in the NFC Championship Game, giving the Rams new life and directly leading to a score.

The Seahawks still won the game, and the rest is history, but anything could happen.

Finding the fine line between calling a genuinely disgusting or unsportsmanlike act and someone merely talking smack is something the league’s officials have yet to grasp fully.

Looks like they’ll get another year to figure it out.
