The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong pledged on Tuesday to safeguard the interests of the industry and to tackle future challenges as the group elected its new leaders.

“The society will, as always, continue to safeguard the interests of the industry, enhance professional standards and facilitate candid exchanges and dialogues on the industry’s future development and related issues between the industry and the government,” the society said in a statement.

“No matter how challenging the outlook for the newspaper industry may be, or how the media landscape continues to evolve, newspapers – as a major source of news – must remain steadfast in their commitment to truth, shoulder their social responsibilities in promoting positive values within society.”

At Tuesday’s annual general meeting, the society elected Tammy Tam Wai-yi, the editor-in-chief of the South China Morning Post, as its chairwoman.

Alex Ko Chi-ngai, chief operating officer of Ming Pao, Raymond Huang, the editor-in-chief of Wen Wei Po, and Vincent Teng Chuen-cheong, chief editor of Hong Kong Economic Journal, were elected vice-chairmen.

A total of 15 council members were elected, including Ang Jin, the chief growth officer of the Post.
