Police in KwaZulu-Natal are trying to establish what happened after a viral video of a shooting in Durban made the rounds on Sunday.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal are trying to establish what happened after a viral video of a shooting in Durban made the rounds on Sunday.

  • A video of a shooting on Sunday in Overport, Durban, during which a suspect was killed, has gone viral.
  • Police are investigating the incident.
  • The Overport Ratepayers Association has issued a scathing statement in which it described the shooting as totally unacceptable.

KwaZulu-Natal police are trying to piece together the events that led to a shooting in Durban that resulted in a suspect being killed on Sunday.

According to a video that has gone viral and which was reposted on Facebook by anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee, the incident took place on Crescent and East streets in Overport.

“According to Rangers Security, one suspect was fatally shot during the incident, while another individual sustained injuries and was transported to hospital for medical treatment,” Abramjee wrote in the post.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda told News24 that police were still investigating the shooting.

The video is not clear; however, a barrage of bullets can be heard, and pedestrians can be seen scattering as they hide from the bullets.

Meanwhile, the Overport Ratepayers Association called for “urgent police intervention on crime in the area”.

In a statement, Overport Ratepayers Association chair Abdool Valodia said the association was “deeply concerned and appalled” by the shooting.

“This incident is totally unacceptable. A public park should be a safe space for families, children and residents to enjoy, not a site of violence and criminal activity. Such events erode the sense of safety and security that all residents of Overport deserve,” Valodia said.

He said residents were tired of living with escalating violence, including gang-related activities and drug dealing that threaten daily life.

“This latest shooting highlights the urgent need for immediate and sustained police intervention to restore law and order,” he said.

The association called on the authorities, including the South African Police Service, community policing forums, and the eThekwini municipality, to:

  • Increase visible policing and patrols in high-risk areas, including public parks and streets around the area.
  • Address the influx of vagrants, unauthorised car guards, and drug trafficking through targeted operations and enforcement.
  • Prioritise resources to tackle the root causes of crime in the ward, including proper management of public spaces.
  • Engage directly with community leaders and ratepayers to develop and implement effective crime prevention strategies.
  • Ensure swift investigations into the shooting and bring those responsible to justice.

He said the association was ready to work with law enforcement agencies and local government to address the challenges.

“However, we cannot accept the status quo of escalating violence, disorder and neglect in our neighbourhoods,” he said.
