Shipwrecked Nightmare at Sea: How many died in the Costa Concordia disaster?

  1. Netflix's new documentary Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea has become the most-watched title among UK subscribers. It still remains the number one title on the platform nearly a week following its release. The film features previously unseen footage from the tragic 2012 Costa Concordia disaster and survivor testimonies. In what viewers are calling an 'absolutely heartbreaking' watch, it shows the chaos after the cruise ship hit a rock and began to tilt.
  2. It was more than an hour before the order to abandon ship was finally given. Footage and translated recordings show the confusion and chaos that surrounded the situation. Out of more than 4,000 people on board, 32 tragically lost their lives. This includes passengers and crew. Harrowing details emerged during Captain Francesco Schettino's trial about how some of the victims died. French passenger Francis Servel gave his wife his life vest as she couldn't swim.
  3. However, he was then unable to find a lifeboat place himself. According to a report in The Guardian at the time, he either fell or threw himself into the sea but was sucked underwater by a whirlpool and died by asphyxiation. Meanwhile, Italian passenger Maria Grazia Trecarichi slid off the tilting ship while waiting to be rescued and drowned.
  4. Some passengers drowned while still aboard as water rose violently inside the tilting corridors. The final body wasn't found until November 2014, more than two years after the incident.
  5. Captain Schettino was convicted of manslaughter and abandoning ship, receiving 16 years behind bars in February 2015. The term consisted of ten years for manslaughter, five years for causing the shipwreck, and one year for abandoning passengers, to be served consecutively.
