Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday directed the local administration in Maharajganj and Kushinagar districts to ensure all necessary preparedness measures and vigilance in view of the severe flooding of the Bhotekoshi River in Nepal’s Rasuwa region.

A 32-member group from Kolkata on Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra was among many from West Bengal who went untraceable after the flash floods in Nepal on Wednesday, an official said.

The group, comprising 30 tourists and two tour managers, left the city on August 21 and reached Nepal the following day, he said.

The group reached Rasuwagadhi in the morning to cross into Tibet. Its members were at the immigration office around 8.30 a.m. when the flash flood struck the area along the Nepal-Tibet border, he added.

“There has been no communication with any of the 32 members since the flash flood struck the area,” the official told PTI.

“We are trying to establish contact with all those from West Bengal who may have been in the affected areas. The situation on the ground is extremely difficult, and communication has been disrupted,” he said.

The Chhattisgarh government on Wednesday issued helpline numbers to assist citizens from the state stranded in Nepal due to flash floods and landslides, officials said.

Chhattisgarh residents stranded in Nepal or their family members can contact the Disaster Management Helpline at 1070 or +91-771-2223471 for assistance and information, they said.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the state government stood with its citizens during the crisis and was working to ensure the safe return of those stranded and provide them with necessary assistance.

The helpline numbers were issued following the Chief Minister’s directions, the officials said.

Bihar was put on high alert on Wednesday as floodwaters from Nepal entered the Gandak river and reached the Gandak Barrage, prompting authorities to open all 36 gates to control the surge, officials said.

The barrage is situated at Valmikinagar in West Champaran, the northernmost district of the state that shares a border with Nepal.

Around 1.50 lakh cusecs of water was released from the barrage by 11 pm, the highest discharge recorded there on Wednesday. The water flow is expected to start receding now, they said.

As soon as the news broke, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary convened a meeting with the Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit and other top officials to review the situation.

The highest discharge recorded this year was 2.24 lakh cusecs on July 14, 2026, while 5.625 lakh cusecs was recorded on September 28, 2024.

“The situation is expected to remain normal. Nevertheless, all teams are on alert at the barrage, along the embankments and in the control room,” Water Resources Department secretary Chandrashekhar Singh told PTI.

In a post on X, Mr. Choudhary said the loss of lives due to the devastating floods in Nepal is extremely heartbreaking.

13 out of 23 working personnel have been contacted from the Timure district.

1 out of 9 working personnel has been contacted from Rasuwagadhi district.

5 out of 8 working personnel have been contacted from Syaphrubesi district.

3 out of 8 working personnel have been contacted from Mailung district.

9 out of 10 working personnel have been contacted from Betrawati district.

5 out of 6 working personnel have been contacted from Haku district.

According to the police, 28 personnel have not been contacted yet, adding that 3,318 personnel were deployed.

Seven tourists from Maharashtra are stranded in Nepal amid flash floods, and at least four of them are safe as per the latest update, while efforts are underway to reach out to the other three, officials said on Wednesday night.

An official told PTI that state disaster management authorities have established communication with the four, including two each from Mumbai and Pune.

“We also came to know about three more tourists but are yet to establish contact because of the current situation. We have their details, and we are trying to contact them, but unlike the four tourists who are in their hotels, such details of these three are not yet known,” said the official.

He said authorities are preparing a list of people from Maharashtra who could have been stranded in Nepal due to the floods.

The CMO said a 24-hour control room has been set up at the Mantralaya and appealed to Maharashtra residents requiring any assistance to contact the control room.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Wednesday expressed grief on the loss of lives and injuries to people due to devastating floods in Nepal, and asserted that it is prepared to provide “all possible” help to the victims.

In a statement, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale also appealed to the people to come forward and offer whatever help they can to the victims “during this unforeseen crisis”.

“The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) expresses its deepest sympathy to the families of the deceased as well as all those affected and injured by the devastating floods in Nepal’s northern border region,” Mr. Hosabale said.

At least 157 people were confirmed dead and more than 400, including around 133 Indians, were missing or out of contact after a massive flash flood in Nepal’s Bhotekoshi River swept through villages in Rasuwa, a district bordering China’s Tibet region, on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

In an update at 11:05 p.m. (Nepal time), the Nepal Police said 157 bodies had been recovered.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, 391 foreign nationals and 93 Nepalis were out of contact.

Nepali police said Wednesday they had recovered 157 bodies after a terrifying flood tore through the Tibet border region, taking the overall death toll to at least 160, with several hundred missing.

The police issued an operational update detailing the 157 dead. Chinese state media had earlier reported “major casualties” from a mudslide at a Tibet border hub, reporting three dead and another 265 people missing.

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “warm words of solidarity” and for offering all possible humanitarian assistance to the flood-hit country for the rescue and relief operations.

Thanking Mr. Modi for his “kind call and deep condolences”, Mr. Shah in a social media post said, “We deeply appreciate your warm words of solidarity and your generous offer of assistance to Nepal during this difficult time.”

At least 103 people were killed today and left several hundred missing, many of them foreign tourists.

Aid workers said entire settlements had been “wiped out”. Surveillance footage verified by AFP shows dozens of people running for their lives as a stories-tall surge of debris slammed into the Chinese side of a border area, tossing lorries and buses aside.

Chinese state media reported “major casualties” from a mudslide at a Tibet border hub, reporting three dead and another 265 people missing.

Nepali police said that “100 people have died due to the devastating floods”, with officers “working to move families in flood-risk areas... to safer locations.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today said he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and damage caused by the devastating floods in Nepal, and asserted that India will provide all possible support and assistance to its “friendly neighbour”.

In a post on X, he also expressed heartfelt condolences to the affected families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The Odisha government today set up a control room in New Delhi and issued helpline numbers to assist people from the state who may be stranded or in distress amid the devastating flash flood in Nepal, officials said.

The helpline numbers are +91-7428135044, +91-8527580245 and 011-23012807 for people seeking assistance, a government statement said.

Pritish Panda, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the Directorate of Odisha Paribar, has been appointed as the nodal officer for the task.

“We are coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Nepal to ascertain the whereabouts of people from Odisha who visited Nepal and may have been affected by the flash flood,” a government officer said.

At present, we don’t have any information about any person from the State who went missing in the flash flood, he said.

Several pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh are among those stranded in and around Darchen in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region after flash floods damaged roads and blocked routes in the region, said a pilgrim from Adoni in Kurnool district today.

Nivarthi Ranganath Sastri, who is currently in Darchen with his family, said several groups of Telugu-speaking pilgrims were present in the region, though the exact number of pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh and other states could not be ascertained.

“Groups associated with the Isha Foundation were also present in the region, with each group having at least 150 members, and that around 15 such groups were operating in the area,” Mr. Sastri told PTI.

Darchen, located around 10 km from Mount Kailash, is a key base for pilgrims undertaking the Kailash Parikrama (circumambulation). The affected area, including Darchen and the route towards Mansarovar, falls within a radius of around 60 km.

The World Bank today offered Nepalese Rs. 25 billion in emergency financial assistance to flood-hit Nepal for the rescue, relief and reconstruction of affected areas, according to the Ministry of Finance.

Soon after news of the flood spread, the World Bank’s Country Director for Nepal, David Sislen, informed Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle that up to NRs. 25 billion could be mobilised from various sources as emergency assistance.

India and China have offered relief supplies to support Nepal’s response to the flood-affected areas.

India has immediately provided Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) to the Nepal government. Similarly, China also pledged immediate financial assistance to Nepal, the ministry sources said.

Four tourists from two cities in Maharashtra are stuck in Nepal amid flash floods, but are safe, officials said today.

An official told PTI that State disaster management authorities have established communication with the four, including two each from Mumbai and Pune.

He said authorities are preparing a list of people from Maharashtra who could have been stranded in Nepal due to the floods.

“We are monitoring the situation and gathering information to identify any other Maharashtra residents who may have been affected by the floods,” the official said.

The Telangana government today set up a helpline and coordination centre at Telangana Bhavan in Delhi to provide necessary assistance to citizens of the state whose relatives may be stranded or affected in Nepal due to devastating floods in the Himalayan nation.

The helpline has been set up following a directive from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, an official release said.

The government is closely monitoring the situation, and Telangana Bhavan, New Delhi, has been directed to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Embassy of India in Kathmandu and other concerned authorities, as may be required, for facilitating necessary assistance to Telangana residents, it said.

The family members who are unable to establish contact with their loved ones, pilgrims or tourists from Telangana who are in Nepal at present may contact the helpline and furnish particulars, including the name of the person, passport details, mobile number, present or last known location in Nepal, travel/tour operator details and contact details of family members, to facilitate coordination with the concerned authorities, it added.

In response to the devastating flash floods in Nepal, the IAF has swiftly deployed a C-130J aircraft carrying 10 tonnes of essential relief materials and medical supplies.

Additional air effort by C-17 and C-130 aircraft will transport further relief supplies, with helicopters earmarked for rescue and evacuation operations.

An ice-rock avalanche originating in a high-altitude area likely triggered the devastating flash floods that hurtled down from Tibet across central Nepal districts today, experts at ICIMOD said.

Calling the disaster as an example of the increasing frequency of cryosphere hazards becoming more visible, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) also underscored the need for early warning systems and stronger regional collaboration, with governments taking coordinated action to respond to cross-border hazards.

The Delhi Transport Corporation is closely monitoring the flood situation in Nepal, and presently there is no disruption in the international bus service between Delhi and Kathmandu, a senior transport department official said today.

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) runs buses between the two capital cities three days a week from the Ambedkar Stadium Terminal near Delhi Gate.

“We are monitoring the situation in Nepal. Currently, there is no suspension of bus service between the two countries, and operations are going on smoothly. Further decisions will be taken depending on the situation,” the official said.

Amid the devastating floods in Nepal, the whereabouts of 37 tourists from Tamil Nadu, who were reportedly on their way to a temple in the Himalayas, are yet to be confirmed, officials said today. 

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay said that senior government officials have been put on the job to “rescue swiftly those who are missing”.

Thanjavur Collector R. Revathi said that of the 57 tourists from the district, officials could account for 20 of them.

Speaking to PTI, the collector said they have identified the 20 people. “We do not know what is happening with the rest for now; we are awaiting more information,” Ms. Revathi added.

Of the 20 identified, 11 are women, according to official sources.

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah urged the Himalayan nation to stand united after a devastating flood today killed at least 95 people.

“The pain and loss you have suffered is not small. But I want to assure you that you are not alone in this difficult time — the State is with you with all its means and resources,” Mr. Shah said in a statement posted to social media.

“Please be patient. The government takes full responsibility for your rescue, treatment, food and shelter. In times of such a disaster, we all need to stand together.”

Keralam Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan today said the State government was monitoring the situation in Nepal, where more than 100 Indians were reportedly missing after a flash flood.

The CMO said preliminary information suggested that more than 100 Indians were among those missing in the flash flood in Nepal.

As directed by Mr. Satheesan, Chief Secretary Bishwanath Sinha was in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs to ascertain the situation, the CMO said in a statement. 

It also urged families unable to contact Malayalis travelling in Nepal to inform the Chief Minister’s Office.

Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra appealed to the Government of India for an immediate search operation to be launched to find the missing people in the Nepal flash floods. 

“At the same time, every possible humanitarian assistance should be provided to the people of Nepal,” said Ms. Gandhi in a post on X.

At least 95 people were killed in Nepal today after a massive flood tore through the border region with Tibet, a police spokesman told AFP.

“So far 95 deaths have been reported,” spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle said, adding that some 28 police personnel were also missing.

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu is closely coordinating with the Government of Nepal for the early rescue and relief of Indian nationals affected by flash floods in the Himalayan nation today, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The embassy earlier in the day issued emergency phone numbers for those seeking assistance and information related to Indian nationals affected by the calamity.

“Embassy of India in Nepal is closely coordinating with Government of Nepal for the early rescue and relief of Indian nationals affected by today’s flash floods in Nepal,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang today expressed deep anguish over the loss of lives and widespread devastation caused by the floods in neighbouring Nepal.

Mr. Tamang said he was “deeply saddened and devastated” by the disaster, offering condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

“I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who are suffering from this irreparable loss and my heartfelt sympathy to all my brothers and sisters who have been affected, displaced and have lost their homes, property and livelihoods due to the floods,” he said.

He prayed for the safe rescue and rehabilitation of those affected and for the early restoration of normal life in the disaster-hit areas.

The Indian Air Force will deploy two aircraft carrying relief material to Nepal amid the flash floods. 

A C-130 aircraft carrying relief supplies is scheduled to depart from Hindon Air Base late tonight, while a C-17 aircraft carrying additional relief material is expected to leave for Nepal the next morning.

President Droupadi Murmu has condoled the lives lost and also pledged India’s support to the Government of Nepal in the relief and rescue operations.

Lok Sabha MP Dayanidhi Maran today sought the urgent intervention of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for the rescue and safe repatriation of Indian tourists, including around 50 from Tamil Nadu, who are stranded or missing in the devastating flash floods in Nepal.

A sudden, massive flood swept through two central Nepal districts bordering Tibet, killing four people, causing extensive devastation at settlements along the river and damaging at least a dozen hydropower projects early today.

The flood surged through the Bhote Koshi river at around 9 a.m. (local time), coming from the Tibet side, affecting Rasuwa and Dhading districts bordering Tibet and Nuwakot district, southwest of Kathmandu, officials said.

NDRF says that, as per the Central Water Commission’s (CWC) report, there has been a rise in the Trishuli River at Furke Khola, Nepal (160 km from the border) due to suspected GLOF near the Nepal-China border. 

The report says that a flood wave is likely in the Gandak River in India. 

NDRF has put U.P. and Bihar on high alert. A total of 9 and 11 teams have been deployed in Bihar and U.P., respectively.

Press statement by Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav regarding the loss of life and property caused by flash floods in Nepal and the potential threat to Bihar:

In view of the likelihood of increased water flow into Bihar due to flash floods in Nepal, residents of vulnerable and affected areas in the relevant riparian districts must remain alert, and the Bihar government, in particular, must stay vigilant and prepared.

To tackle any adverse emergency or threat, the administration should maintain constant monitoring and ensure all necessary administrative and technical preparations — in addition to relief and rescue operations — are in place. The government must ensure 24/7 monitoring of dams and embankments to guarantee their structural integrity and safety.

We urge party workers to keep local residents informed and aware by providing necessary information and warnings, especially in the districts along the Gandak River — namely West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali.

Bihar was put on alert over the possibility of a sudden rise in the Gandak River’s water discharge following flash floods in several districts of neighbouring Nepal today, prompting the State authorities to open all 36 gates of a barrage on the river to help control the situation, officials said.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary convened a meeting with the Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit and other top officials to review the situation.

All concerned have been directed to remain on “high alert”, take all necessary measures in a timely manner, and maintain continuous vigil over the situation, officials said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today expressed concern over the flash floods in Nepal and directed the administrations of Maharajganj and Kushinagar districts to take all necessary measures to deal with any potential emergency.

The floods could cause the water levels to surge in the Gandak and Narayani rivers in the neighbouring districts, an official statement said.

Maharajganj shares border with Nepal and Kushinagar is adjacent to Maharajganj.

According to the statement, Mr. Adityanath described the damage caused by the flash floods in Nepal as a matter of serious concern.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has alerted all its formations along the 1,751-km India-Nepal international border following massive flash floods in the neighbouring country, officials said today.

They said 18 teams from the force, including seven on standby, have been deployed to launch relief and rescue operations in the border areas.

The SSB alert comes amid forecasts of increased flows in the Koshi and Narayani river basins along with the possibility of flash floods in smaller rivers across Nepal, officials said.

Vulnerable districts along the Ghaghara/Karnali and Mahakali river systems in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also being monitored by the paramilitary force, they said.

About 50 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu were stranded in Nepal today, after an early morning flash flood triggered landslips in their route.

Officials of the Tamil Nadu government have initiated action towards their rescue upon receiving the alert, official sources said.

In view of the flood threat in Bihar due to torrential rain and glacier burst in Nepal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary over the phone. 

The Home Minister assured the State government of all possible assistance to deal with the potential crisis. 

NDRF is being mobilised to deal with any emergency situation.

Eight South Koreans working on a hydropower plant were missing, ‌and 10 others were stranded, following a massive flash ⁠flood along the Nepal-Tibet border, Yonhap News Agency reported today, citing ‌South Korea’s Foreign Ministry.

The workers were employed by ‌Korea Energy and Doosan Enerbility ‌Co, ⁠the report said, ⁠adding that Nepal has deployed a rescue team to search the affected area.

Another 10 South ‌Korean workers affiliated with Doosan Enerbility are stranded in the area and awaiting a ‌helicopter sent by Nepalese authorities to evacuate them, it said.

South Korea has established ⁠a task force led by the Foreign Minister and plans ‌to send a joint rapid-response team comprising government officials and fire and police authorities to Nepal as soon as possible, the report said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered all-out efforts to search for and rescue people missing after a mudslide struck villages at the China-Nepal border area in Tibet causing heavy casualties.

A total of 145 officers and soldiers from the Xigaze detachment of the People’s Armed Police have been sent to the mudslide-hit border port to assist with emergency response operations.

China’s Tibet Autonomous Region shares a roughly 1,400-km border with Nepal.

The mudslide struck near Gyirong Port today. Drone footage showed some buildings at the port buried by debris, Chinese official media reported.
