S Jaishankar expressed concern over the West Asia conflict, stressing its impact on India's diaspora, energy security, and economic stability.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday said India’s energy security and the interests of its citizens will remain the government’s top priority amid the escalating West Asia war. “The interest of Indians is the top priority. He also said that West Asia is critical to India’s energy security, warning that the escalating conflict in the region could trigger supply disruptions and instability with wider economic consequences.
Speaking in both Houses during the Budget session, Jaishankar said, “There are one crore Indians who live and work in the Gulf nations. In Iran, too, there are a few thousand Indians for study or employment. The region is key to our energy security and includes many important suppliers of oil and gas."

He described the situation as a matter of serious concern for India. “This ongoing conflict is of particular concern to India. We are a neighbouring region, and have obvious stakes that West Asia remains stable," he said.
Jaishankar cautioned that the impact of the conflict could extend beyond the immediate region. “Serious supply chain disruptions and a climate of instability are serious issues," he said.
Flagging the deteriorating security environment, the minister added, “The conflict has continued to intensify, and the security situation in the region has deteriorated significantly. The conflict has spread to other countries with mounting destruction. Normal life and activities are visibly affected."

He noted that nearly one crore Indians reside and work in Gulf countries, underscoring the government’s concern for their safety amid the hostilities.
Pointing to the gravity of the crisis, Jaishankar said India had formally conveyed its concerns over the war on February 28, 2026. His remarks come amid escalating hostilities that have raised global concerns over energy supplies and the welfare of expatriate communities in the region.

He reiterated the call for “dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate the tensions in the regions," while pointing to rising casualties and the collapse of the Iranian leadership.
The minister informed the House that the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been closely monitoring the developments.
Amid the escalating situation, Jaishankar said, “All ministers were directed to take appropriate measures to tackle this issue."

He further noted that “the situation has further worsened in the region and has spread to other nations," pointing to the expanding geopolitical fallout.
Despite disruptions in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar maintained that the government remains committed to a peaceful resolution, asserting that “dialogue and diplomacy are the ways forward for all sides to de-escalate."
Opposition members continued to raise slogans demanding a full-fledged debate under Rule 176 on issues relating to energy security and the safety of the Indian diaspora.
