Ready to embark on an action sports audio-visual journey you’re unlikely to ever forget? Mountains of the Moon is the latest and most ambitious project to date by the talented artist, skier, and filmmaker, Chris Benchetler. The teaser above gives an idea of what to expect, but it’s still kind of hard to wrap your mind around the scale of the project.

Featuring top athletes from snow, climbing, surf, swim, MTB, and even fishing, the movie is filmed mostly in the dark with the help of “cutting-edge cinematography, lasers, animation, and projection mapping.” Oh, and there are also light-up LED skeleton suits for all the athletes. On the MTB side, the film will feature riding by Hannah Bergemann, Carson Storch, Casey Brow, Ryan Howard, and photography/videography work by Lear Miller, Chris Burkhard, and many others.

Did we mention it’s also set to the music of the Grateful Dead? The massive project is meant to take you on “a surreal journey through ocean, river, and mountain landscapes.” The project builds on (and takes to the next level) some of the concepts Benchetler introduced in Fire on the Mountain, which was created in partnership with Teton Gravity Research in 2019.

Along with the movie itself, which premieres globally on November 15th, the Mountain of the Moon Project includes a book from Benchetler following the same theme, as well as installations at satellite art galleries, including a main gallery installation in Los Angeles, which runs from November 15-23, powered by Arc’teryx (one of the film’s main sponsors). Additional branded collaborations will be offered through Arc’teryx, Grateful Dead, Lágrimas del Valle Tequila and High n’ Wicked Fine Whiskeys, Atomic, SIMMS Fishing, and Dragon Alliance.

For now, the teaser above is all you’ll get until mid-November. But you can get a taste of what’s to come by checking out Fire on the Mountain above.
