A Montana man and his two friends were hiking the state’s Froze-to-Death Plateau in the Beartooth Mountains before he slipped and impaled himself on his 44-inch-long steel hiking pole. A wound care specialist nurse himself, 32-year-old David Cifaldi decided the situation wasn’t urgent enough to warrant a rescue helicopter.
