A strong earthquake struck the southern Mexican Pacific coast today, right on the border with Guatemala, and was felt from Mexico City to El Salvador.

After initial fears of a tsunami due to the size of the earthquake, a warning has now been cancelled.

And authorities have not reported any severe damage or casualties in any country.

Terrifying footage shows the moment the earthquake struck with people seen running into the street.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.3 with the epicentre 48km (30 miles) southwest of Aquiles Serdan, near the coast of Chiapas and at a depth of 15km (9 miles).

It was preceded by a smaller quake with an epicentre a bit farther out in the ocean.

A video shows how the 7.3 magnitude earthquake was felt at a construction site located in Quetzaltenango about 130 miles from the border with Mexico.

The Mexican Tsunami Warning Centre has cancelled the alert following a massive earthquake today.

It states: "Based on the analysed information and sea level observations in the Mexican Pacific coastal zone and on the coasts near the earthquake's epicentre, NO significant variations are expected; therefore, the Tsunami ALERT for the Mexican Pacific is CANCELLED.

"RECOMMENDATION. Maintain precautions at port entrances and during port, tourist, and fishing activities due to the persistence of strong currents in coastal areas."

A strong earthquake struck the southern Mexican Pacific coast, right on the border with Guatemala, and was felt from Mexico City to El Salvador.

Authorities have not immediately reported any severe damage or casualties in any country, although footage shows the fierce tremors.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.3 with the epicenter 48km (30 miles) southwest of Aquiles Serdan, near the coast of Chiapas and at a depth of 15km (9 miles). It was preceded by a smaller quake with an epicenter a bit farther out in the ocean.

There were at least five aftershocks between magnitude 5.1 and 6, according to USGS.

Luis Demitrio Lopez, of civil protection in Tapachula, has said that a woman has been left with serious injuries after throwing herself from an apartment building, at a height of "around four or five metres", having felt the earthquake tremors.

She has been taken to Tapachula General Hospital where she is receiving treatment.

Mexico's tsunami warning centre says no raised sea levels have been noticed so far.

Tsunami alerts have now been removed for Baja California Sur, Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacan.

It states: "Based on information from the National Tide Gauge Network and sea level observations along the coasts near the epicentre, NO anomalous sea level variations have been recorded.

"Monitoring by the National Tide Gauge Network will continue until the alert is cancelled. The Tsunami Alert is ruled out for the states of: Baja California Sur, Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacan.

"Keep the population away from beaches until the alert is cancelled; strong currents are expected at port entrances."

Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, head of the Navy, said: “We are only expecting a rise in water levels of up to half a metre on some beaches due to the tsunami effect caused by the earthquake. The public is advised to stay away from the beaches for the time being, but there is no problem. Thank you.”

People within the areas under risk from a tsunami after the earthquake off the coast of Mexico have been warned of the dangers from drowning and being hit by debris.

The US Tsunami Warning System states: "Persons located in threatened areas should stay alert for information and follow instructions from national and local authorities.

"Persons caught in the water of a tsunami may drown... be crushed by debris in the water... or be swept to sea."

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged people not to go near beaches at risk of tsunami waves for the following six hours.

She wrote on X: "Following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake southwest of Huixtla and those recorded in Ciudad Hidalgo, I spoke with the governors of Chiapas and Tabasco, states that report no damage at this time.

"Protocols are being activated in neighbouring states. The Secretariat of the Navy recommends not approaching those beaches in the next six hours due to tsunami risk. It is important to follow Civil Protection recommendations.

"Authorities from all three levels of government are conducting inspections in the territory to assess possible structural impacts and coordinate preventive measures. We will continue with updates."

Guatemala's national disaster response service says that evacuations have been carried out.

It is responding to a 5.6 magnitude earthquake with its epicentre in Quetzaltenango.

CONRED stated on X: "Following the 5.6 magnitude earthquake recorded, institutions that are part of the CONRED System activated their plans and carried out preventive evacuations to safeguard the safety of collaborators and visitors."

And President Bernardo Arevalo wrote on X: "The @ConredGuatemala system is active and deploying plans in response to the 5.6 magnitude earthquake recorded with its epicentre in Quetzaltenango.

"So far, there are no fatalities, and we are monitoring the situation minute by minute. I call on the population to remain calm and to follow the recommendations for these cases."

At least five tremors have been felt this morning in the state of Chiapas, with buildings shaking and people running into the street.

The strongest earthquake was of a magnitude of 7.3, located 135km southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas at 8.48am (local time) with a depth of 10km.

And the most recent was a 6.1 magnitude quake located 37km north of Mapastepec Chiapas at 9.20am and a depth of 135km.

Governor of Oaxaca State in Mexico, Salomón Jara Cruz, says that "no significant damage" has been reported.

He wrote on X: "The earthquake was felt with moderate intensity. Immediately, Civil Protection agencies activated review and monitoring protocols in the regions to verify possible impacts and safeguard the population.

"So far no significant damage has been reported. Citizens are urged to remain calm, follow the authorities' recommendations, and stay informed solely through official channels."

People have told of feeling buildings shake and rushing into the street in Guatemala as the earthquake has also been felt there, over the border from Mexico.

Staff were evacuated from government buildings as security protocols were activated in Guatemala City.

No damage or affects from the earthquake have been felt in Mexico City, say authorities, while in parts of Chiapas it has been felt "strongly".

National Civil Protection has given the impact in the following areas:

• CDMX: not felt by the population and without report of damages.
• Carmen, Campeche: felt lightly by the population and without report of damages. Preventive evacuation was carried out in high-rise buildings.
• Tabasco: felt lightly by the population and without report of damages.
• Chiapas: felt moderately, without report of effects. The SPC Chiapas activated monitoring protocol, units from Civil Protection went out to carry out tours, at the moment without effects.
• SPC Frontera Hidalgo, Chiapas: felt strongly*, without report of effects. Preventive evacuations were carried out.

Emergency services in Mexico are making initial assessments for damage following the earthquake off its Pacific coast.

National Civil Protection wrote on Facebook: "#Earthquake magnitude 7.4 southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas.

"From this event, we maintain communication with the state and municipal units of #ProtecciónCivil and the members of the National Emergency Committee (#CNE), to carry out a preliminary assessment of the area."

The magnitude of the earthquake has been revised down from 7.4 to 7.3, according to the United States ‌Geological Survey.

7.3 still constitutes a very powerful quake.

The tsunami warning centre in Mexico says sea levels could rise "up to 105cm" following the earthquake.

It states: "EVALUATION: Based on preliminary earthquake information and historical data of tsunamis generated in Mexico, anomalous sea level variations of up to 105 centimetres above tide level are expected in the region where the earthquake originated.

"RECOMMENDATIONS: Keep the population away from beaches until the alert is cancelled; strong currents are expected at port entrances."

According to the United States ‌Geological Survey, the earthquake had a depth of 10km.

The shallower the quake, the more damage and shaking it tends to cause.

The earthquake took place at 8.48am local time southwest of Huixtla, Chiapas, says the National Seismological Service.

In response, the National Coordination of Civil Protection (CNPC) says it is maintaining communication with state and municipal units in order to conduct a preliminary assessment of the possible damage in the area.

Images shared online show people have been evacuated onto the streets from buildings in Guatemala.

There are reports the quake was also felt in El Salvador, as well as in Mexico.

People have reported feeling the earthquake in neighbouring countries Guatemala and El Salvador while evacuations have taken place from buildings in Mexico.

An alert has been made from US and Mexican tsunami warning centres.

The epicentre lies 71km west-southwest of Puerto Madero, off the coast of Mexico and Guatemala.

Mexico is located in a seismic zone because five tectonic plates lie beneath its territory.

The Caribbean, North American, Pacific, Rivera, and Cocos plates are all located in the area and the constant interaction between them creates a high risk for earthquakes.
